550Spyder Posted 6February, 2014 Report Share Posted 6February, 2014 Russ - care to elaborate on your teaser? Assume you mean the sixties Tasman series running 2.5 litre cars, an excellent era. No p cars but some brilliant drivers like Clark, Hill(s), Gurney, Rindt, Rodriguez vs. locals Brabham, Mclaren, Hume, Amon, Gardner and McRae. Surely the coolest racing in Australia's history. Many happy memories of a misspent youth at Lakeside. Even to have a back of the grid Tasman mate is number one cool in my book.
Russ Posted 6February, 2014 Report Share Posted 6February, 2014 His name is Paul Bolton and this is his Brabham at Wigram in 1968 (the one in the hangar) he also won in Australian Touring Cars a bit and was on the cover of Motor magazine and knew some fairly famous drivers. He has a great collection of photos from the era too and did some overseas testing too oh, and this is the drivers briefing from that race (he's on the right, and that's Bruce McLaren, Jim Clark and Pedro Rodriguez)
Russ Posted 6February, 2014 Report Share Posted 6February, 2014 I've sort of lost touch with him since he moved up north but I'll get back in touch and try and get him along
550Spyder Posted 7February, 2014 Report Share Posted 7February, 2014 Wicked photo of the drivers briefing , very sixties. I had seen this photo before but never knew who the fourth guy was. Given that the other three all died racing your mate is the lucky one ! I know wigram pretty well having grown up in Christchurch and being a yearly visitor for the lady wigram throphy. Unfortunately long after the Tasman series, but formula pacific meetings at Wigram still had (future) F1 drivers like Keke Rosberg, Danny Sullivan, Roberto Moreno, Teo Farbi, Larry Perkins, Andrea de Cheseris, Mike Thackwell, Desire Wilson, Christian Danner plus some pretty interesting drivers who went onto some pretty cool things such as Adrain Reynard (Reynard cars / BAR F1), Rob Wilson (f1 driving coach to kimi rikenenen), Ross Stone (stone brothers racing), Ivan Tigh / John Nicholson and Peter Larner (legendary engine builders). Great times. Hard to get too excited about v8 super cars in comparison. Paul Boulton would be a cracking guy to have a beer with!
