T-Man Posted 4February, 2014 Report Share Posted 4February, 2014 I've had a small issue with the AC losing it's gas and it looks like the evaporator is the guilty party. No big deal, all I have to do is de-gas the system, drain the fuel tank, remove the radio, CCU, fuel tank and most of everything behind the fire wall to get to it. Porsche book it out at about 10 hours I think. I reckon it may take me a little longer!!!!!!!!!! Now as I was dismantling half of the car I discovered that the actuator that controls the recirculate flap in front of the evaporator was not actually connected to anything! There are no hinges, pivot oints or arms to move the flap once the actuator fires. Having said that, the actuator's vacuum feed is cut off and plugged so no actuation will happen anyway! First thing I thought was that some half-wit had disconnected things instead of repairing a fault, but the more I researched with the Google machine, the more I realised that some early ROW 993s came out this way!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The factory cut and plugged the vacuum line and removed the mechanics to move the flap. What on earth were they thinking and why? To top things off there is a TBS showing how to replace the mechanics should the owner want this option!!!!! I would really like to know if anybody else here has the same design. I don't expect anyone to disassemble the dash, however the firewall cover unclips pretty easily and you can clearly see if the vacuum hose is cut and plugged. Would really like to get to the bottom of this and why the factory did this on some cars. Photo is from a car in England. Exactly the same as mine. Actuator missing the bits to open the flap. What the actuator should look like (LHD)

GC9911 Posted 4February, 2014 Report Share Posted 4February, 2014 Tman, have you tried removing the plug & connecting the vac hose to see if the actuator actually works? Probably stating the obvious!!!!
T-Man Posted 4February, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 4February, 2014 Steve. Have a look at the hose sitting on top like a semi-circle.Bet you a beer it has a plug in the end closest to the electrical connector or it has nothing at all.My car also has that loose white vacuum line you can see which is what operates the actuator.mines not plugged
T-Man Posted 4February, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 4February, 2014 Tman, have you tried removing the plug & connecting the vac hose to see if the actuator actually works? Probably stating the obvious!!!!Fair question Greg. The white cable that I made reference to above in Steve's photo operated my actuator when vacuum was applied! Simonoz Posted 4February, 2014 Report Share Posted 4February, 2014 I'll have a look at mine tomorrow and report back. I know mine needs some attention because it cuts out the aircon briefly when I lean on the throttle. Just for the time I accelerate, and it cuts back in a soon as I ease off. Not sure why but I can't recall it doing it until recently. Anyone got the same issue?
StevepGT3 Posted 4February, 2014 Report Share Posted 4February, 2014 Savour this moment in history Theo, you may have never heard this before and you may never hear this again YOU ARE RIGHT, that hose on top is plugged I was looking at the one with the black tube up it. T-Man Posted 4February, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 4February, 2014 Can't wait until I show the Mrs........"See luv. Someone does think I'm right for once"! Bet you a beer the things connecting the actuator to the flaps is missing too!!! But that's a little harder to see without taking out the CCU. This is a really interesting observation. Now all we need to do is hunt down the guy in the assembly line that did it and find out why!

Russ Posted 13February, 2014 Report Share Posted 13February, 2014 forgive my ignorance, but isn't the cabin filter there to stop that happening to the evaporator?
T-Man Posted 15February, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 15February, 2014 forgive my ignorance, but isn't the cabin filter there to stop that happening to the evaporator? Not certain as to how all the air circulates but most of the gunk on the evap is because of the leak and the oil/coolant seeping.
