JustJames Posted 16February, 2015 Report Share Posted 16February, 2015 My garage band...After 2 years of sounding really crap, we're now scaling the dizzying middle reaches of mediocrity. After songs used to have to be re-learnt every time we got together, we're now adding songs to our repertoire at a dizzying rate.Yee haaaa!!!!! Pretty satisfying when songs come together. Are you playing originals or covers?
JustJames Posted 16February, 2015 Report Share Posted 16February, 2015 All covers...with a great deal of genre confusion. Current set list has stuff from the 40's (Autumn Leaves) to the 90's, with various rock/pop/blues things in between.Autumn Leaves is giving me special delight at the mo'. We've got a kid playing cello with us for a few songs, and he does a great job on it, and our ladyperson singer absolutely nails the vocal. What instrument(s) did/do you play Tony? edgy Posted 16February, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 16February, 2015 +1 You will love the place Edgy. Been there 5 times. First time was an all expenses paid by the government 12 months. (1970-71) After that I said I never wanted to see the place again. Then after a big night on the turps back in 1999 I was talked into going back with some Vietnamese friends. Since then have been back with my wife 3 times from 2010 and reckon we are due to head back again. Great people and hard to beat the hustle the bustle, the smells, the chaotic traffic etc etc. I love the people and the place. Feel free to PM if your looking for any info, I think we have been to most of the places including the islands. Have fun. I'm envious. Thanks for the offers Nkio! that post was from Feb 14, we went last May/June. haha Absolutely amazing isn't it? I spend some time in Asia for business and my dad is asian as well so we've spent some time in SE Asia.. but there is nothing like it that I've come across! You are right the people make it! here's my take from places travelled. Saigon - I liked, the mrs not as much... I just love the craziness of a big city, I have business partners there too so we were lucky enough to get to roll with the locals Da Nang - is fantastic, I can't quite put my finger on it.. but its quite peaceful and although quite developed still retains lots of its old world charm and culture. Hoi An - Absolutely cannot wait to go back.. we loved this little gem, its EXCELLENT cuisine and lovely people. Nha Trang - Paradise, albeit a little commercialised but my god we had too much fun there! Did not get to the North that time, would love to go and see Hanoi and Ha Long bay as well as some other spots like Dalat & Dien Bien Phu. We're planning a big Asia holiday trip soon, I'd like to include Laos and Cambodia. But currently I have been thinking lots about that Europe trip, apart from all the obligatory spots, Belarus has my attention.... any advice there? For the most part we did originals with the odd cover. A mostly early 90's rock influence. Was fun, but ultimately didnt have enough time for it once the kids came along. I still have an acoustic I play every so often. How about yourself? You should post up some songs if you have them recorded
JustJames Posted 16February, 2015 Report Share Posted 16February, 2015 I've been a guitarist for ever, but I'm a drummer for this. Playing an instrument that involves hitting stuff and making lots of noise is more cathartic than I would have believed possible.
_Tony Posted 16February, 2015 Report Share Posted 16February, 2015 I've dabbled with drums too, can hold a decent beat but thats about it. Certainly the instrument to play if you want to take your aggression out on something. JustJames

Seen the 14th of Feb bit of your post but missed the 2014 bit. actually just stumbled across this whole thread. Glad you enjoyed V.N. you will love Hanoi, (and the North in General) much more "civilised" than Saigon. Can't help on any advice on Belarus, sorry. We are addicted to Asia, and haven't ventured anywhere else. Cheers mate.
Stew F Posted 16February, 2015 Report Share Posted 16February, 2015 This might sound a bit nerdy, but after spending a lot of time messing around with chopping up USB plugs and network cables I finally got my computer to communicate with my telescope mount. Now I can drive the scope remotely from inside the house and view images on the screen via my also sorted webcam eyepiece. Happy days. Or perhaps happy nights. Now hopefully we get a few clear skies. Harvs11 Posted 17February, 2015 Report Share Posted 17February, 2015 It seems I'll be working out the whole Belarus trip on the fly... In the good old Soviet era a friend was travelling through Russia. The Aeroflot jet managed to take-off on the THIRD attempt. Bon voyage! edgy
