Cuban Eight Posted 13February, 2014 Report Share Posted 13February, 2014 Hello folks, I purchased an '83 928S about 18 months ago and one of the first jobs I had done was a service on the auto transmission. My local auto mechanic was not super impressed with what came out with the filter and oil (clay muck) and advised me that it looked like it had never been serviced and was not much longer for this world. Unfortunately his prediction did not take too much longer to come true with the tranny starting to slip badly in 2nd & 3rd gear giving me a top speed of about 60km/hr! Not exactly what I had in mind when driving a 928. Anyway the decision was made to remove the transaxle assembly and get a rebuild under way. My mechanic was reluctant to have a porsche with no rear wheels stuck on his hoist for an unknown period of time so I removed the gearbox myself and dropped it off to his workshop. I was suprised with how easy everything came apart on the Porsche. Although a reasonable sized job I had no troubles with rounded or rusted bolts, even on the exhaust system. Anyway, the bad news continued with the dismantling of the gearbox. Clutch packs were completely worn down to metal on metal as were two of the three bands. To rub it in water had gotten into the box at some time and as it had previously been sitting around there was rust scale on the bands and elsewhere. Altogether it was in pretty poor shape. The upside was the gears & valve body seemed pretty good, little wear on the gears. The pump has some scoring on the outside ring but those gears seem ok too. The problem we have now is sourcing some replacement parts that are in better condition than what I currently have. We were going to get the bands relined but because of the rusting there is some pitting on the inside, not bad but if I can get some better ones it would be nice! My mechanic has exhausted his contacts here in South Aust. and was starting to make some calls interstate. I thought I would ask the forum here where I might be able to find some bits & pieces. Thanks guys, C8

Russ Posted 13February, 2014 Report Share Posted 13February, 2014 are these the same ZF boxes out of a W116 Mercedes? (internally that is, I'm aware of the transaxle arrangement) EDIT: I did some googling and I've got even less of an idea than when I started: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/928-forum/476960-did-mercedes-manufacture-the-complete-928-automatic-transmissions-2.html might be worth talking to a MB transmission expert though
