Orion03 Posted 26March, 2014 Report Share Posted 26March, 2014 I find the 997 key to be really bad quality, i.e with my keys the plastic bits are all cracked and at the moment I have tape holding the key together. Now.. is it just me? or do others have the same problem? Can I get new plastic bits for my key?

Steiny Posted 26March, 2014 Report Share Posted 26March, 2014 Had the same problem with both keys. Really tacky. First model keys were flimsy. There's an expensive fix (through the dealer) or the better one which I did. Get on eBay and there a number of sellers who provide just the plastic casing from the later version key. General cost is between $24-$50 depending on where you order from. They are identical to the later 997.2 remote heads and good quality. They've been redesigned so not to automatically unlock your doors when you put your keys in your pocket. You have to transplant your circuitry including transponder chip to the new key head. You'll need to dissolve the glue around the transponder using goop-off and a hairdryer. It's finicky and takes time but doable. Plenty of websites on how to do this. I will post some links. edit: Here's a pretty good how to: http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/997/318620-diy-porsche-997-key-shell-transplant.html
Hounddub Posted 26March, 2014 Report Share Posted 26March, 2014 I am really surprised with this. Have to say that my leather "swivelling" key cover protects my keys pretty well when in my pocket and I don't hang any other keys on my car key. ......or I'm just not heavy handed as my keys look like new.
