Thoughts on the purchase of a 993 tiptronic as a daily?

So I'm looking for a car to drive daily, and to put the kids in the back of (and for some reason cannot bring myself to look at a cayenne)...

Anyway, I love driving my 76 930, but was thinking of getting a 'daily' to keep the k's down and to make sure that I still have a p car to drive when I take my beloved car off road to properly restore...

A 993 convertible is an awesome option, only thing is its auto... I love driving, and heal and toeing and all the other stuff that goes with it. Is it a step too far?

Thoughts please?

Sat my two boys aged 8 and 10 in the back of a 996 cab and got many a complaint! Could see why when I got in the back myself but having said that I dont know if the 993 seats have the same angle, however if I told them we are going out for dinner they would travel in anything!

How ironc. I was walking the dog tonght and struck up a conversation with a fellow Porsche owner who was washing his car. He is the original owner of a lovely silver 993 convertible with red roof, 1994 model, drives it every day and says he'll never replace it.

My youngest son is now 12 and the back seat of the 993 is becoming rather uncomfortable for him.

IMHO the rear is good up to about 10 years old. So if you want a 993 to cart around the kids, better do it while they are young.

Well he/she is really young at the moment, like due in June young!

I was looking at the 993 tip mainly due to the fact one has come up right within budget, looks good, price is right and unfortunately is tip. I'm probably more worried about the fact that its Tip more-so that squeezing the kids in the back... I was originally looking at a 996, but for some (probably totally wrong reason) i just feel more comfortable putting my money into a 993 instead...

Matt, Matt, Matt,

If you start from the belief that driving a Tip will make your testes drop off and you will lose the will to live because you can no longer heel and toe, a Tip is not for you.

If however you think of a Tip as a complementary addition to your existing garage, that can be driven anytime by anyone, that just like your 930 gearbox, takes a little learning to access it's hidden delights, then maybe it is for you.

Kerry, please make a sticker saying "I'm Tip and Proud"

Firstly, your child won't be getting in the back until after 6 months old. Rear-facing baby seat just won't fit. Even if it did, your baby would be baked by the sun through the rear window. Not a good look for a father

Secondly, I have a tip (with a newly rebuilt engine) and the kids adore it. Even Mrs has driven it, but she would never drive a manual. So it will be easier on the family.

Finally, these are not as big (obviously) as a family wagon. Taking baby, pram, wife, nappies etc is not a small ask. I've done it, bit was tight.

Hope.that helps.

Yes, too much time overseas means I've been on here very sporadically, and in my car even more sporadically...! Visiting Porsche dealerships in other countries is fun though. Californian dealership a few weeks back, Seoul dealership last week, HK today...

Anyway, back to the question at hand... but first an introduction..

My name's Gavin and I own a 993 tip...

And I f'ing love it. Would I love a manual more? Yes. Would I swap a manual for my wife. Nup. Was the tip fun at Eastern Creek in December. Hell yes. Would a manual have been more fun? Marginally.

When I'm driving around town I usually spend a fair bit of time in manual mode which is nice, and I've mastered blipping the throttle on downshifts for fun.Not quite heel/toeing, but keeps it interesting.

The seats in the cab are canted forward and basically suck. That's why I walked away from a cab and went for a coupe. My kids are 6 and 8 (and like me they are tall) - but I've not had a single complaint about comfort from them.

Hi Chris, can you advise as to where the child restraint points located on the 993 coupe?

Really? Buy a Golf, keep 930 for weekends.

I think a 993 tip would make a perfect daily.  As far as I can tell you get two cars in one.  Stick it in D & potter around enjoying the old school sound & if you're out on a good road, into manual mode and above 4k it lifts its skirts just like a 911 should.  When we test drove ours I was ready to be underwhelmed but once I got to stick the clog in it was just fine.  Get it (& if you're really not sure, give me a call on 0424153774 to come out for a drive in ours one day - we're just up the road).

Cheers,

Gavin
