964 A/C Expert in Sydney?

The air con in my 964 is working fine from a heating and cooling perspective but it is bloody noisy. The fan is pretty loud but not too bad but there is a hissing sound behind the dash somewhere that is driving me nuts.

I know that the a/c in 964's is marginal at best but I figure I need an expert in Sydney who can work out what the noise is all about.

Anyone has any good experiences?

It's likely the "hissing" sound is the small fan behind the climate control unit that just needs to be removed, cleaned and the shaft oiled. It's a common 964/993 issue and reasonably easy to fix because the unit mounts like a stereo unit and uses the same wire keys to unlock the mounts.

The main fans may simply have dry bearings too. You might be lucky and find just lubricating the easily accessible front bearing will do the trick and avoid the hassle of having to remove the motor. (I was!)

Not really complex AC work and are well known issues so any good Porsche experienced mechanic will be very comfortable fixing if you don't want to have a go yourself.

If it's this...then:

Hi Craig,

You could get Cavaco Motors to look at it . they are in Glebe.

If it's behind the dash , the sound will be a small impeller in the control unit that assists with the temperature sensing.

Cavaco changed my unit when they did the whole AC . Expensive item.

However there used to be an article on Pelican parts ( I believe, but now can't find) that narrowed down the noise to this impeller and gave instructions on how to remove the unit , dismantle and lubricate the impeller.

Good luck

Cheers

  • 3 years later...

Responding to my own topic of 3 years ago. I finally got the A/C working on my 964 and it only cost $5000 :-(

After realising that I have been favouring other cars over the 964 due to is lack of A/C I finally got it fixed last month. As it turns out the hissing was the easy part to fix, as suggested here it was the small sampler fan behind the control unit. Unfortunately that didn't have much to do with the lack of A/C. It was a 27 year old condenser that had a small leak for a long time hence the build up of dirt and gunk was so bad it effectively stopped airflow through itself. It was a big job to get the condenser out as the fuel tank had to come out etc. To be fair the cost was for a full rebuild of the whole A/C system not just the condenser. It is now ice cold and I am enjoying the little gem again. Given the current values of 964's the cost to rebuild the A/C was a no brainer. The other reason for doing the rebuild is that the 964 is now permanently off the track (see previous comment about current values) and is in the process of being replaced with a 968 so she will be a weekend cruiser.

I'm in the process of doing this right now... $$. Draining the fuel tank was fun! :P

Did you mean condenser or evaporator?  Condenser is in front of the passenger side wheel I think?

I'm also replacing the 'squirrel cages' either side of the evap as they love to squeal...

The CCU fan was one of my first fixes when I got the car.

Looking forward to aircon for Christmas holidays!

I'm sure Cbt meant evaporator.  You're right with the condenser location.  Is your condenser fan ballast resistor ok so you are getting it to operate on 2 speeds?

With the squirrel cage fans you can can quiet the squirrels by soaking the motor bushes in engine oil.  Cheap and very effective.  I find just sitting the motor in a container with a shallow depth of oil overnight works.  Not too deep to contaminate the brushes/ commutator.  The depth for the other end depends on if you can get the fan off or not!

Yep. We are doing the resistors too. Like ctb, we are going through the whole system. New seals, condenser/dryer, TX valve etc.

I've already bought the squirrel cages as I don't really want to go back in there again!

Good suggestion though, thanks!

Ps. My aircon must be half full of dye and sealing goo!

Correct, I meant Evaporator. We also did the seals, valves etc. We also went through all the actuators that control the vents (those little blacks things with the white moving arms).

Yeah, I'm paranoid we are going to break one of those!
