Committed to purchase an immaculate silver MY03 996GT2 this week, collect next week.

Having now done a bit of research I suspect it could be like 964s - overlooked for a while and on the cusp of becoming noticed again. EVO magazine ranked it high up the list of future icons with 4* investment potential. Several of the 20 or so Aus delivered cars are known to have been heavily crashed and written off. Others have been heavily modified and flogged.

So how many remain in the condition of mine - probably 10 or less at a guess. Not planning to wrap it up in the garage though - it will get used but looked after.

Can't wait.

This forum proved absolutely invaluable (again!). Uncle put me onto the car originally (had not considered GT2). Hugh, Vas, Simonoz, edgy in particular were quick to offer helpful insight, advice and thoughts. Getting feedback from long term porsche guys and those who have owned and know turbos and GT2s gives great confidence. Thanks guys, I'll need to get a PFA sticker to show my appreciation!

Watch this space for photos once it arrives.

First order of business is to decide whether to keep the carbon side scoops and rear wing or refit the silver original bits that come with the car. Leaning toward the latter but need to see it in the flesh first.

B)  Congrats again mate, she's a glamour and I'm glad I was of help in some small way, you did exceptionally well. Most the 996 GT2s I have seen listed in recent times all seem to have stories.

I find it hard to see how you could go wrong! These cars have the right DNA and you know they don't make em like that anymore, they were made in a time when Porsche Motorsport were retail death merchants: GT1, GT2, GT3 & Carrera GT

I definitely look forward to your feedback! :)

Cheers

Yeah sounds like autohaus maintain his race 968. They might have done some work on the GT2 but it seems mods and tuning mostly done by PR for current and previous owner.

PPI by PR done today $700 and was very thorough (waaaaay more comprehensive than KTEC did on the 964). They also offer 50% off if you don't buy this car and bring another car for them to inspect - that's a pretty good deal I reckon.

The outcome? Few minor bits and bobs as you get with any 12 year old car. Mechanically it's great. Good compression/leak down. Brakes good (motorsport brembos on the front). Noisy gearbox and diff but that's to be expected due to single mass flywheel and LSD "that's what they do". Only odd thing is r spec tyres on rear only - apparently the only way to contain wheel spin......

PR reckon its a very good car and a great buy at the price.

Done deal, collect next Friday.

Let's see:

Extinguisher - tick

Helmet - tick

Cage - tick

Seats - tick

Harness - tick

Semi slicks - rear tick, front nope. Might be more fun the other way around!

Ability - limited

Club membership - tick

CAMS licence - tick

Balls to go hard through kink on back straight in a 550hp rwd - cross

If all goes well with the pickup, maybe. Probably prefer PI after I've had a bit more seat time. As a minimum, we should head down for a look.

I see a lot of ticks...................a wet track may require an extra large pair of plums!

Nice one, keen to hear what you think of it.

Sorry for the side track in the thread - Hugh, have done their track days before and they are great, about 10 cars on the track spaced out at a time. Last time out there did about 7 sessions of 20 minutes each and towards the end of the day its open slather as not many people do a full day.

With this in mind i think the OT should take his GT2 on the day and become comfortable with his beast........... :) We have a a nice mix going on the day 991 (me), C63, F430, 458, M3 HSV GTS, i350. Should be a blast.......

Sounds like an interesting group of cars and plenty of track time.

I did a Driver Dynamics day years ago (maybe 2008?) when they ran Friday evenings at Sandown (cancelled after a few events due to neighbours whingeing about noise).

I found that particular event a bit hairy - no track marshals or safety crew to speak of and a bunch of complete novices (mates) in hot GTRs, S2000s etc racing each other like they were in Fast n Furious with a bit of drifting mixed in.  No scrutineering, sketchy driver's briefing.  Pretty dangerous day out.  High risk of accident and no contingency.

At least at club track days, they check cars are safe, give a proper briefing, have flaggies and first aid available and people are generally "on the same page" and respectful of each other's machinery and varying ability.  Not always, but mostly.

Hopefully they've improved a lot since then.  Timing wise, might be a bit too short notice for me although I did just agree with current owner to also buy his set of 18" Oz rims with semi slicks.......so I'm really ready to go.

Hugh, by the way, did you transfer WA to Vic yet.  I'll need to do NSW to Vic when I get the car.

Ordered Euro plates V GT 203 (GT2 MY03).  That'll do.

Wow, it's lovely.

I was admiring a white one on carsales not that long ago for $180K, the market for 911s is certainly all over the place.

I'm not really across the turbo cars generally, though, is a GT2RS the same as a GT2?

Yours is a concours car, IIRC part of the reason you sold the 964 so quickly was that it was too nice to track...

Yep and the fact it didn't make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and someone offered me 20% more than I paid.

I was not so much concerned about stone chips, more about the slippery slope of cage, harness, seats, suspension then probably chasing horsepower then brakes and before you know if, you have a 964 C2 that no one wants. There is one like that on POrsche Club website, been there a while. Probably a fabulous car but not the clean original 964 that is growing in value rapidly.

The GT2 is setup for track out of the box, no shortage of grunt and my one also has clubsport interior fitted with original touring parts supplied as well. The GT cars are built for motorsport (adjustable coilovers, rose joints on GT2, cage, extinguisher etc) so the odd track day here and there won't affect value.

Ps the link above didn't work but i assume it's the grey 996 with gt2rs plates. If so, not sure if it's actually an RS. I believe it has been raced in production Sports and is pretty ratty. Has run slicks, carbon doors, stripped interior etc (apparently). I was advised it would be a fast track pig at a cheap price but not a road car that you'd pay $140k for.
