DJM Posted 19August, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 19August, 2014 It does seem to have a reputation, I'll be taking it easy for sure.Preferred track for my first outing in the new car. Much less daunting than sandown IMHO - billiard table smooth, nice and wide, heaps of runoff. I've done lots of laps in lots of cars and have several offs due to enthusiasm exceeding talent, Touch wood, no damage done. Turn 1 and the kink at the hay shed require brave pills but take it easy there and you'll be fine. Most accidents I've seen are running wide onto main straight staying on the power, sideways with rear wheels off in the gravel / grass and then it gets nasty. Usually accidents are due to people behaving badly or doing stupid things. I was once overtaking mid track on the main straight and some hero in an ex v8 super car blasted past at maybe 240 with right wheels in the grass. Crazy stuff. It's addictive though - you'll want to keep coming back.
Pauly Posted 20August, 2014 Report Share Posted 20August, 2014 how do you drive on the road then? If I tell you, i'll have to kill you. I drive sensibly. 5th gear or neutral when i see an officer. keeps me out of trouble. I got a defect for being to loud once. (i thought 1 muffler on a 3" turbo back would be ok since the US guys do it all the time) I bought another muffler and installed it. went to a local exhaust shop to get a db reading to go vic roads and clear the defect. I registered 101db. Being a fellow P car enthusiast and an overall good guy, he wrote me up as 89 - pass so i could get it cleared as long as i didn't drive for a few weeks. hugh Posted 20August, 2014 Report Share Posted 20August, 2014 Sounds silly but it works. You will tend to go where you look. Absolutely. When I coach kids riding bikes I have to tell them to keep looking forwards - as soon as they check out their mate to the side that's exactly where they end up! Its very good advice! I'm looking forward to hopefully getting an intro tour of the track in the GT2 - everything will then seem to be in slow motion when I get back in mine.................... Harvs11 Posted 21August, 2014 Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 95 db. Looks like i won't pass the pits LOL Last PCV sprint here was marred by very strict noise limits. It seemed like half of the field had warnings or got booted. Take a noise reduction kit with you. Some hose clamps big enough for your tail pipe and a tube with a bend that can direct the gases down onto the road surface. Ally drink cans make a good emergency silencer. a big wad of steel wool to stuff in the pipe could help too. An easy fix for a 996 is to remove the last portion of the pipes. This leaves the pipe pointing straight down. Noise is dissipated by hitting the road before it gets to the sound meter which is trackside.
Airhead Posted 21August, 2014 Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 Noise meter at PI is on drivers left just near the end of pit lane exit. Bendy pipe pointing to the right of the car usually works too.
DJM Posted 21August, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 21August, 2014 I got warned for noise at sandown in my clubman. I just slotted 6th and cruised past the noise meter mid main straight then back on it again. Not great for lap times but avoided the day being over early. Harvs11 Posted 25October, 2014 Report Share Posted 25October, 2014 In. (Insert scared face here). Good one Hugh. I've heard your car. Get an extension with a 90deg bend made for your tail pipe...just in case.

DJM Posted 25October, 2014 Author Report Share Posted 25October, 2014 Meh, your car sounds great but not that loud compared to some cars. If you get a warning on the day, just back off as you pass the tower (or wherever the meter is on the day). Im sure you're not gunning for lap record so won't spoil your day. They measure at a distance from the track so should be ok anyway. My exhaust is quite loud at full boost but I'm going to chance it. Gives me an excuse not to go flat out into turn 1.....gulp,

Harvs11 Posted 25October, 2014 Report Share Posted 25October, 2014 It's hard to tell what will set the dB meter off. Some cars which didn't seem loud got hit, while others which we were sure would be too loud passed. It may be something to do with the pitch. Any muffler shop would be able to make up a short extension to slip over your tail pipe. Use a good hose clamp to hold it in place
hugh Posted 2November, 2014 Report Share Posted 2November, 2014 Bit of a late update but it twas a busy weekend............. I headed down to the Phillip Island on Friday with Doug (DJM) for the Trident Maserati track day. I have only driven my car once since doing Winton (June) and that was out to breakfast at Dakdak and after spending most of my time in the 964 it was cool to get back behind the wheel and take the car for a run. It was great weather and quite a big turnout for a Friday. I had not considered the long weekend factor I guess as this most likely contributed to adding numbers for a weekday event. The Maserati club events attract cars of all shapes and sizes, plenty of Porsche's, pretty much all GT3's - so many GT3's...............There was only one other 'old' 911 there and that was a 964 RS (yes a real one! The owner also have a 993 RS), in white. A few Boxster's and Cayman's too.................. Being my first outing at PI I took it pretty easy, I also had to ensure I could make it home in time to pick the kids up from school - so no time for mechanical's! Had 4 sessions in total, mostly due to a GT3 cup car going off at turn 1, track was closed for 2 hours while they repaired the tyre wall and did a recovery. Out of respect for the owner I didn't take any photos of the car, neither did I take photo's of the 458 Fezza race car that burst into flames inside its pit garage - pretty horrific thing to see go down. All in all was a really good day and having driven it so little recently I fell in love with it all over again. To just take the cover off, fill it up with fuel, punch out a day of laps and drive it home still with half a tank and very little noticeable wear on the tyres is really great - they are just such great little cars. The photographer there made up a really nice poster of my car for his display, I couldn't resist so I took it for a souvenir of the day - our resident framer Niko has been put on the job!
