Ralphk Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 Hi Guys, Want to say hi and share a dilemma. Like many I am a car nut and have wanted a Porsche for a long time although never looked close, well there was the budget and I also thought I could not fit into one.....looks like I am wrong on both counts. I took a 996 turbo for a spin and am absolutely hooked....I thought my modified hsv was quick. I am looking at a 996 turbo in either convertible or hard top but am having a difficulty in deciding. Would love to hear opinions and thought as I am wondering if the convertible is something one really wants and when finally one has it it is not quite what one thought. Thanks guys Ralph
hugh Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 Hi Ralph, 996 turbo, nice. Hardtop gets my vote. (No offence to the cab owners, just stating personal preference)
ByronBayChris Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 I like the lines on the coupe. Convertible hump when roof is down looks out of place. Experts: is coupe still stronger in these later models?
clutch-monkey Posted 10January, 2015 Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 I like the lines on the coupe. Convertible hump when roof is down looks out of place. Experts: is coupe still stronger in these later models? yes, and lighter. 4 seat convertibles do not work imo.
Ralphk Posted 10January, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 10January, 2015 Thanks guys. I am not sure if you are helping with my mid life crisis :-) I made an offer on both and will see if either comes back. I think the kids would love the convertible I am not really fussed hence asking for opinions which so far say hardtop.
Coastr Posted 11January, 2015 Report Share Posted 11January, 2015 Thanks guys. I am not sure if you are helping with my mid life crisis :-) I made an offer on both and will see if either comes back. I think the kids would love the convertible I am not really fussed hence asking for opinions which so far say hardtop. How young are the kids? You might want to check if you can get seats into the convertible if they are still in boosters. I vote coupe. Australian sun is too hot for convertibles most of the year. Ralphk Posted 11January, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 11January, 2015 Kids are boy 7, girl 13 these two fit fine in the back. The 17 year old has his own car and I thank the government for the restrictions on p platers :-) Point taken about the sun but a lot of my time driving is night and evening, I do about 50000km per year but spread that over 2 cars and a bike. The 911 I am planning to have as the primary car and about 30000 per year.
firstone Posted 11January, 2015 Report Share Posted 11January, 2015 Ralph I have the 2001 Boxster, which is the sexy Caymans brother. Budget shifted me to the soft top since I wanted the mid engine P but without high expense as I plan to find a rear engine air cooled coupè as well. The soft top holds a different shape externally, that needs to please you. Inside you tend to forget you're in a soft top with the top up until you initially enter the vehicle on a hot day. Soon enough though the air con equalizes things. Top down, my 11yr old step daughter says it best, 'everyone should experience this'. Now I can't imagine a time in the rest of my life that I won't have a convertible in my line up. As it is a significant investment, and is much easier to purchase than sell, you may want to find a way to trial each example for some reasonable time and realistic likely driving types and routes. Ralphk Posted 11January, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 11January, 2015 Thanks you are right most things are easy to buy a different thing to sell
Niko Posted 11January, 2015 Report Share Posted 11January, 2015 Hi Ralph, some good points above. Personally I think the 996 iconic p shape should be in the coupe. But, if your kids are coming into the equation, I fully agree with firstone. My grand kids 13 and 10 absolutely love going for a drive with the roof down. i guess if you decided on the cab you could always get a hard top as an extra, .I'm assuming they would be Available... 996 turbo whichever way......nice Good luck with it. Russ Posted 12January, 2015 Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 cabriolet with the hardtop might be a good compromise?
Caver Posted 12January, 2015 Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 My thoughts exactly Russ....go the convertible and get a removeable hard top!
Jimmy Posted 12January, 2015 Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 Removable hard tops were standard with all Aust delivered 996 Turbos.

edgy Posted 12January, 2015 Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 I think the Cab Vs Coupe is a very personal decision, so only one the OP can answer! Either way, its a bad ass car!
ByronBayChris Posted 12January, 2015 Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 I suppose nobody would call the OP a hairdresser in a 996 Turbo, hey?
f3nr15 Posted 12January, 2015 Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 Ah, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet, a synergy of two incompatible philosophies. A car for dentists, n'est-ce pas?
edgy Posted 12January, 2015 Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 I suppose nobody would call the OP a hairdresser in a 996 Turbo, hey? They could... they'd be awfully disappointed when the light goes green though.
Simonk Posted 12January, 2015 Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 I think the rear seat backs are more upright in the cab. I don't know if that means less room than the coupe. Someone else might be able to confirm. Coupe gets my vote, firstly due to extra safety with the kids in the car. Secondly, there's a very slight chance I might do some tracks days in the future and wouldn't want to do it in a cab (if you're even allowed) I may not ever do one but I still want the option. Ralphk Posted 12January, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 12January, 2015 Hmmm bit late for me to become a hairdresser or another stereotype.....here I was thinking I am just a middle aged, chubby and bolding bloke having a mid life crisis. I have been told by my kids that it is all ok as long as I don't start wearing a baseball cap backwards. Thanks for for the info on the removable hardtop, I will make sure I add that to my list of questions if looking at a cab.
