I know of a place called chequered flag in mordialloc that specializes in secure storage for special cars. It's where Davidd used to store his 993 GT2. If you are interested I can get the contact details for you

I really want to open a specialised car storage facility and live out my days tending to old cars at other peoples expense.   Secure and out of the way, close to great driving roads and with a coffee lounge for casual meetups and hoist/workshop for rent.   I met a guy in England who did this and it seemed like the perfect lifestyle to me.  Maybe some RV/Boat storage on the side for cashflow.

You can buy my property in Byron then :)  All setup

I will be your first customer

Somehow I think I might be undercapitalised at this point to purchase a Byron property with sufficient space.

I do think there is a market for it though, with plenty of people moving to smaller houses and less free time but still wanting a few cars.  The guy in the UK I was talking to had a covered truck and did airport dropoffs and pickups.  So you could get the car delivered to the kerb at the airport and drive away in it, then get it picked up again at the airport.  Also organised services either drop-off or mobile mechanics and drove them in loops around his property to keep it going.  He had a lift that could be used by customers or (more usually) their own mechanics to do work on-site.   So awesome walking into a shed full of napping cars with their little trickle chargers disappearing up under their blankets.

The big problem in Oz is the insane cost of land anywhere close to population.

I've just done a cost benefit analysis on a double garage both above ground and another sitting immediately below with double car lifter access.  (Within 3km of Melbourne CBD to provide a frame of reference.)

The subterranean land 'acquired' by excavation is equivalent to $250k to buy (same sq.m) vs $200k+ to do the works pertaining to below ground and the lifter!.

Maybe car storage ain't so expensive and inconvenient after all !

That's an interesting way of doing the sums and justifying it to the minister for finance.

I wonder how much value you'd add to the dwelling though?  Would it be $200k worth?

Certainly my criteria is always garage space.  Lots of people round me fill in their garages to get more house space - silly idea I think.  Everyone needs garage space whether its bikes, motorbikes, boats, cars or other hobbies.

Neighbour of mine excavated out another 2 car garage beside his existing one so he could put away his f250, jetskis and harley.  Instead of paying someone to do it he bought a digger and an old tipper and did it himself, then sold them both at the end of it.

Then his wife evicted all that and turned it into a gym so she could run PT classes.  Can't win.  House is for sale now actually.
