964 RSR Replica Track Car/Weekend Blaster

Recommended Posts

Soooo, entry for Rally Adelaide went in today. Going to run the car in the competition category of the rally.  It was on, then off, then on... I had arranged a dedicated race transporter from WA to and from the event at a very reasonable price if we got the 6 cars ($1500 return) but no one seems to be able to commit, so am gonna suck it up and smash a 2 day drive to Radelaide with the car on the trailer. Should be a nice event to dip the toes back in the water. The clincher for me was all the other bonkers stuff going on with F1 cars and all sorts of motor awesome out on show. Will be good to hang around for the Sunday and just soak it up. Now to pull the finger out, get the race seats etc back in it and get it log booked.

As far as the car goes, I have had the rear section of the cage repainted. Also got the guy to run the buffer right over it. Has come up a treat. Given the rear window was out, seemed silly to put glass back in so I have some lexan cut to go back in. Also have some 993 rear quarter seals coming to do flush fit quarters in lexan as opposed to the glass, steel framed jobbies. Should shed a couple more kg all told.

 Looking forward to seeing this!

I'll put you onto coupla other Porsche competitors, Tim in the Jagemeister car, and Mark in his 72 bitsa hot rod (@porsche91172rt on Instagram)

Not sure if they provide any support to anyone, but if you have any problems Thursday and Friday, get onto Craig at Buik Motorsports, as they're (5 minutes from the city), or Mark at RSR Sports cars in Edwardstown (10 minutes) both Porsche specialists

Cheers Lee,

hoping to turn up with a well prepped car and just tip fuel into it, check the oil and tyre pressures :) Fingers crossed that's all it needs. Good to know there is local support if required

Look forward to meeting you and some of the other enthusiasts while we are there. Also looking forward to some lunch stops in the Barossa and McLaren Vale during recci :)

Not that I can offer much mechanical problem solving help, but I can swing a spanner, have a basic shed or driveway to work in if you need it (I'm 10kays South of the CBD. No lift though, sorry) and have the SC you can rob parts from if they'll fit, or I can run around to try and find bits. I'm sure Craig and Mark would help out at Buiks if required, so maybe a call to them prior to tee something up just incase? Let me know when you're here for recce, and I'll organise a couple of the lads for a catch up if you and they have time. Reckon you'll love the Adelaide hills, we do! ?

Thanks Lee,

I will give the buik guys a call. Also have the Ktec workshop from WA running a few cars. so hopefully there is some help there if required.

The race the get ready for Radelaide is on in earnest now. Have got the race seats back in, intercom in, new HANS compatible harnesses in. Am just about there. Fitted the lexan screen to the back window. Had it tinted to match the other glass and also put a clear film on the outside I hope will make it last longer than lexan which typically gets surface swirls from being wiped/cleaned. Was an absolute prick to rope it in. The flex of the polycarb was much harder to manage than rigid glass. 4kg saving in that one piece alone. Rubber quarter seals have arrived so next job will be them. But main focus now is to get it log booked. So I have finished the bonnet clips and the battery isolator pull toggle and the inspection has been done and passed.

Gave it a shakedown at a rally sprint on Thursday and got the wife back in the car. Was a good chance to test the fit of seats and harnesses etc and get her used to the feel of this car. Was lacking some rear drive in the tighter stuff so will pull some camber out of the rear. Tyres seem to indicate we aren't using all of the available 295 of rubber. Should also settle the car a bit which can't be a bad thing among the trees.  A mate shot some footage on a potato. Mates down there seemed to rate the sound and light show. :)

Also wasn't a bad result finishing 4th out of a field of approx 70 with a few AWD turbo cars behind.  Its deceptively quick. The extra grunt definitely helps make easy time point to point. Was the first time I have run the rally sprint course in that direction (it alternates clockwise to anti clockwise each round) so took a couple of runs to find where I could and couldn't push. /img]

Details on some of the little jobs. Decided to upgrade the oil cooling. Have added a Setrab 915 cooler (405mm wide and 115mm high) to the front aperture in the 964 bar. Is black so you don't even know its there. So have one in each front guard and that one. Would like to see oil temps stay below 120.

Also fitted the kill switch in the engine bay. Is a simple toggle switch wired back to the same solenoid the dash button triggers. Just drilled a hole through the shaft and ran a pull wire through it. Can have the pull toggle out for rallies and tuck it away on the street. Apparently similar to the cup car setup.

Also did the bonnet pins for secondary bonnet restraint. Always a nervous time drilling into a pristine bonnet. Thankfully didn't stuff it up.y4mzQ7sTWtMpeP3Efjvbpvdh-9a8USWbcHevSYwl

Also did some work in the cockpit. Have got the race seats back in, new HANS harnesses, "Jesus" foot rest for wife, a pouch for her notes, some rennline track mats and floor boards, rennline removable steering hub to help make the yoga manoeuvre to get in easier. Its fkn tight with the winged seats and the side intrusion and carlos bar.

And finally the log book has been issued. so we are all go for Adelaide Rally. Car is in now having the rocker clearances checked in the new engine along with a general once over and spanner check. Hopefully all it needs during the rally is to tip fuel in it and check the air in the tyres.  Will be on the road in just over a week. Cant wait.

^^^ Cheers Gents,

am really happy with the way its coming together. Managed to do the rear quarter windows in polycarb  and 993 rubber seals and delete the hinged steel framed quarters. A little over 2kg a side saved. So approx 10kg in all changing the quarters and the rear window to polycarbonate. Better than expected. It is tough to get weight out of the back of these things and this weight is up high so also a good thing. Tinted and put a clear film on the outside of the polycarb so it matches the glass and hopefully avoid the surface swirls it tends to get.

Am pretty much at the end of my to do list. The leak down test on the new motor came up with excellent results which is a relief. Picked up a tired rear wheel bearing which is most likely the cause of some of the pad knock off I had been experiencing. Other than that its all sweet. Got some of the important stickers on like the battery isolator, tow points and names, and a not so serious one. Used to run this on a mates 34GTR when we rallied together years back. Thought it was time to dust it off. Can't take these things too seriously. :) And the long drive kicks off this Friday. Hopefully roll into Adelaide Sunday and get stuck into recci Monday. .

So i have found my way to Adelaide. Am pumped to have this thing together and be on the road to an event. Had  a crafty mate knock me up a logo for "ZFG MOTORSPORT" a little while ago and did some shirts. Have a mate and his son crewing for us in Radelaide so did a special "CREW" run of t shirts for them. Should be a good surprise. He made the mistake of naming him after me. His son has now got his license and gone car mad. :)

The roadtrip has been thankfully uneventful. Few cows, sheep and roos, but no direct hits. A couple of birds may have been harmed in this road trip. Got 1000km done the first day and found a decent spot to roll out the swag for the night. Got another 1000km done the following and opted for a hot shower and the luxury of the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel. The Coopers Pale off the wood hit the spot. Another 700 odd to get it done today. I got the car off and dropped the trailer at a friends and after a quick wash and a blow dry down Donald Bradman Drive checked in at the hotel. The Valets were all very interested but after seeing the me fold myself into a pretzel to get out weren't so keen. So its rest up tonight and straight into the recci tomorrow..and maybe make time for a nice bite of lunch in the Adelaide Hills and sample the local produce. :)

^^ how’s that trailer Blaise? I just bought one near identical. Not used it yet.

They are a really good thing. Great to load and unload a low car. (About 80mm under my front lip). And tow really well. Will sit on $1.20 all day and may have been tested higher ;)  also not sure if yours has a completely flat punched floor or ramps? I have used both and with particularly wide cars I found the flat punched floor more user friendly as you have more useable width as the ramps have Square tube upstands on the edges which reduce over all width and scar rims if you are off line. Ask me how I know.  :(

Welcome to sunny Adelaide Blaise! ?

Weather should be kind to you going by the week forecast. Hope to catch up during your visit

Love the t-shirts too ?

Thanks for the welcome Lee. Great to be here. Love this town. Hopefully catch up during proceedings. Looks like a slight chance of showers Thursday but hopefully it holds off. Would prefer to get my eye in on dry roads.

So the event was run and won. Hoped to not need them but found I did need the services of Buik Motorworks. Cannot rate these guys highly enough. The first was a minor one. No brake lights at scrutineering.  Seemed the brake pressure sender decided to give up. Thankfully Craig had one on the shelf. Quick swap and we were all good. Day one had tough conditions. There had been a bit of rain so the roads were patchy with water and slippery in places. Seems some in the tour found out the hard way with all 3 stages having crashed cars on them. The competitive field didn't get going until about 11am until they cleaned up the mess. One Ferrari apparently ended up on its lid and took a while to clear. Kind of amusing for a non competitive "tour". We tried to ease our way into it as it had been 6 years since our last proper hitout. By the end of the day we found ourselves 3rd in Modern.Day 2 got off to a decent start with some good times set at the event at Mallala, however things were about to go south. On the first tarmac stage after Mallala, the car threw a fan belt and stopped in stage. (complication of having no charge and a particular lithium battery.) We got it going again and got out of the stage. However where we were battling for seconds, we had lost well over a minute. So that was the end of our rally. We got the belt on and shimmed up the pulley but it seemed to have been stretched beyond service and continued to throw it in the next couple of stages, so we cut our losses and headed back into Buik where the guys had a new belt on the shelf and gave me a hand to get it fitted and get the tension set. This got us through to the end of the event, (still slipped a bit)  but to avoid a repeat, the Clewitt Engineering serpentine pulley set with tensioner has been ordered.I think the repeated wide open throttle to complete stop and back on and off the gas of Tarmac rally is hard on them.  On the up side, we stayed on the road, didn't hurt the car and really enjoyed the amazing roads around Adelaide. There just aren't any bad roads in those hills...although the suburban roads are woeful, but all is forgiven. :) The event was really well run and i think all bodes well for the future. Some pics and incar below.

Thanks Mike,

yeah sadly it threw the belt on the first stage. (Anstey Hill). We got it back on but it threw again on the next one and at cork screw. By that stage I didn't want to risk the engine and headed to town to sort it so we didn't get our second pass on those stages which was a shame as they were crackers. Would have been a good spot to see the field come through.

Bummer mate. Shame you had some issues, yet glad Craig and the boys helped you out

Also a new job and motorsport festival meant I couldn't get anywhere near the event and catch up and say gday. Hope to see ya back here next time

Loved the video too, nice work
