Teutonic Posted 23September, 2015 Report Share Posted 23September, 2015 So I am looking to try to first optimise the torsion bar setup on my 74 widebody 911. (Or stop me here and tell me to ditch it in favour of coilovers ) I have a little more work to do taking stock of what the car currently has but have spotted a few things... Koni Yellows (sport) at the rear but the fronts are different so unknown. Maybe there is a better option here?Adjustable sway bars. Receipt tells me an 18mm and 20mm, Part number suggests from Performance 9. Torsion bars...based on receipts I have a 23mm (performance 9 based on part no.) and a 30mm "sway-away" tubular on the rear. (based on the part number)Turbo tie rodsAdjustable spring plates (performance 9??)Have installed an elephant racing bump steer kit up front. Have on the shelf and yet to install their quick camber kit up front. That's about where it is currently. Any input on how it might be improved are appreciated. EDIT: Re usage it is track focus with some street driving but happy to compromise daily duties for track performance.
ber911 Posted 24September, 2015 Report Share Posted 24September, 2015 Could probably do with bigger torsion bars out back and shocks revalved to match the torsion bars.Pretty harsh on the road but great on the track.Rob
michel Posted 24September, 2015 Report Share Posted 24September, 2015 Dude what are you actually asking? You've got a track biased ride by what your describing? you've actually done laps in the wee beastie? that's where i'd begin and tap into some local knowledge - plenty who'll want to joy ride. I'd also figure out what the front shocks are. 30mm rear t-bars are mighty - not much fun on the roads I drive hope youre mainly doing track time - if not jail time
clutch-monkey Posted 24September, 2015 Report Share Posted 24September, 2015 Coilovers are a bit of work and usually when you need a really stiff (track only) setup iirc, should get away with current torsion bars and upgraded shocks to match? michel Posted 24September, 2015 Report Share Posted 24September, 2015 Sort out front shocks - make sure frnt and rear are working wellmake sure all bushes balls and tie rods are peachy - makes a big difference. If you want to go cool over rebel elephant make all the kit you need.if you want to get a woodie look on elephant racings site talk to some race shops
9er Posted 24September, 2015 Report Share Posted 24September, 2015 Sounds like a good starting point, some nice fresh R spec tyres will help.
jamesb Posted 26September, 2015 Report Share Posted 26September, 2015 I have 23 and 31 in mine with stock sway bars. Have only had it at the track once. It felt neutral. You can get 24 fronts and up to 36 rears. Or you can get what you want custom made. I think Performance 9 can do them.Maybe try 24 front and 33 or 34 rear. That would be like 290 front spring and a 430 or 490 rear. Not that stiff really. My understanding is the more rear tyre you have the stiffer you can go at the back. Teutonic Posted 28September, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 28September, 2015 Thanks Gents appreciate the input. I guess the question I was asking is, with other platforms I have played with, there is generally a well trodden path for good track suspension setup that can still be driven on the road. Obviously each individual has their own idea of what they consider tolerable on the road, and which brands they prefer, but there are some pretty widely used ride heights, spring rates, camber settings etc. Just didn't want to go and reinvent the wheel. Have had a closer look up front and it runs Koni sport as well. So sounds like what is already under the car is a reasonable starting point. I certainty don't find it bothersome to drive on the road, just need more track time. Have some new r comps on the way (295 rear 235 front ) so might as suggested just go over it and make sure what is there is all in good working order, get a good alignment into it and get some track time and see if there are any major shortcomings. Cheers for the input.
Shady Speedway Posted 28September, 2015 Report Share Posted 28September, 2015 Following with interest. I'm looking at a new set of TB's after snapping a rear on the weekend.Running R888s and not too fussed about ride, just love the feel of a stiff ride. Not about to track the car though.
