996 as a daily driver

I've been thinking of buying another car.  I have my wife's Triton 4x4 to sell shortly, and I was contemplating getting a 996 as a daily driver once I get rid of my Suzi.  Interested in what others' experiences are with using them as an everyday car.  Manual or tip, 2wd or 4wd, etc. There are quite a few decent low mileage ones around at the moment, including a few with "factory" GT3 body kits.

I've had mine for almost four years now and purposely purchased a tip as I drive through the city daily (stop/start) and has over 200K on the clock. Touch wood all I do is put fuel and service it annually and enjoy the beauty that is P-Car driving

Great fun in tip mode and a lot of car for what you pay. Easy to modify if you are that way inclined as there is a plethora of information especially on renlist.

I would highly recommend it!

Cheers Lee.  I've been eyeing off that white one actually.

Likewise, my weekday driving consists of a combination of mostly metro, with a bit of country driving on occasions.  Mt Gambier, Barossa Valley, etc.  I think a Tip would make for an enjoyable commute to work.  I love driving my SC, but I don't really want to rack up the miles on it.  I'd rather keep it for weekends.  Plus, I think I'd get sick of driving the SC everyday.

I thought you'd prefer the white one ;-)

Black is a bitch to keep clean, even under covers! Grrrrr

I had a black (Diamond Schwarz) BMW M previously.  Great colour, but a pain to keep clean.   I do have a penchant for white cars.

I would agree that a tip is the way to go for daily driving. Manual can be a bit of a pain in traffic, particularly at slow speeds. Manuals can be a little quirky at times due to the clutch and shifter, hence there is a bit of talk out there about switching to 997 quick shifter/after market on some forums as it's stronger than the standard which wears out due to the bushes and general plastic quality.

Otherwise than that it's the usual issues which you hear about on the 996; IMS, RMS and AOS.

Great car for a daily. I got the Mk1 tip. I only got the tip because the Mrs can't drive a manual and I need her to be able to drive it when I take the Cayenne. She loves it. I chose the Mk1 because I actually prefer its looks over the Mk2. Being cheaper was obviously a bonus. It's a very easy car to drive every day.

I agree that a short shift kit is a big improvement, I would recommend the Numeric Racing kit as a top item.
