All was fine, and then it stopped. 993 not running

Pretty simple.  Was driving OK, then a petrol smell started to creep in to the cabin.   Going up a slight hill, and the engine just cutout.   All lights came on and the car rolled to a halt.

Tried to restart - car would crank but not stay running.    After 20 minutes, it would start and kick over for 2 seconds.   Then stop again.

Has been towed to Stokers VW where we will get it on the hoist tomorrow.

Fuel pump ?

fuel pump relay? fuel pump? fuel lines?
can you hear the fuel pump working? wiggle the relay in it's socket or swap it for another known good one of the same size
all a guess based on the fuel smell

do you have a diagnostic computer to plug it into?

Def sounds like a fuel pump / fuel line issue.

Check whether you can hear the fuel pump when the car is on reds.

Check your fuel lines running from the fuel tank to see if they are cracked or leaking or letting air into the system.

Also going to rig up a jumper for the DME and see if I had a dead spare.  Found this on Pelican.

In an absolute roadside emergency, you can wrap a paper clip around terminals 87, 87b and 30 and reinsert the relay long enough to get the car to a safe location. This is NOT a substitute for a proper relay. If you have a paper clip on you, then you should have had an extra relay or two in the fuse box, which you should use instead of this MacGyver approach.

Agree about having a spare DME, however a spare paperclip is known to work and not be faulty also.

So, swapped out to the spare DME.  Nothing.

Made a harness and jumped the three sockets for the DME.   Nothing.

Wrapped the paperclip around the DME terminals (87, 87b, 30).  Nothing.

DME had power coming out of it.

Connected a power source to the fuel pump.....and it pumped, so that was ok.

About to run a cable from pin 87b on the DME to the fuel pump.

Checked under the fusebox - WTF - the immobiliser (as always) was installed by a chimpanzee from a remote jungle who had never had the opportunity to discover what happens when a wire is squashed between a fuse box and a metal car.   It was melted.

Cleaned it up and the car started and ran.

Phew, but now I do carry a paperclip with me as well as a spare DME relay.

And only took three hours of time.   Not too bad.
