It's home

Drove it for the first time today, 30km back home from the garage it's been at since I dragged it out of the warehouse it had sat in for 23 years

Goes really well, gearbox shifts smoothly, brakes work well and all the electrics bar the radio and electric aerial work. The old tyres will be changed shortly, the noise from the massive flat spots on them is horrendous so they're heading for the bin in the next few days to be replaced with a set of Bridgestone RE003's.

Booked in for registration on Friday morning. Hopefully they'll accept it's a real car and not give it a new chassis number. Turns out it's been off the road so long (23 years) the chassis number isn't listed, so I'm taking all the original delivery books with me to verify it all.

Sat on the drive next to my daily car, first time it's been stored outside for 23 years....

It's taken a fair bit of time to get it running again, albeit it hasn't cost that much.

The fuel system was solid and the tank rusty so everything came out to either be cleaned or replaced. New pump (same as a Saab), filter, cleaned injectors, left the tank with apple cider vinegar in it to clean out the rust and solid layer of evaporated fuel. I actually bought a new tank in case the old one couldn't be salvaged, so I'll have to try and take that back to Porschapart and see if they'll have it back (or sell it). Skimmed the discs (they were almost new, just 25 years old), bled the brakes through to see if the calipers were seized and they weren't, so that was a bonus. Changed all the oils, fluids and filters while the bores sat with oil in them. It fired up first turn of the key once the injectors had been cleaned, bit oily for half an hour or so but it idled perfectly. There's obviously something gooey on the exhausts somewhere that's going to take a while to burn off, I've got this kind of whitey grey smoke coming from underneath when sat stationary but other than that, I'm astonished how good it is.

Needs a massive detailing session though, the paint's dull and the interior's pretty dusty. I'm tempted to have it detailed but not painted, part of me quite likes the patinated look of the front end. The other part of me wants it mint, so I can see that being a battle !

Looks very nice, but I think just a bit of a clay, wash with degreaser where needed and 2 coats of wax should give you a better indication of where it is at. Have it like that for a bit then paint correct it, then decide if you want to bump it up with something like opticoat or kamikaze.

Yeah, clay and a cut will work for most of it. The bonnet, front bumper and under the headlights has been painted in the past, very poorly so no amount of cutting will sort that out. It's ok from 6 feet away though
