It's Alive

For those who know what I've gone through over the last few months finally I have started the engine. For a car that hasn't been started for 10 years it started straight away! She blew a lot of white smoke guessing oil build up in the exhaust but that calmed down after a few starts.

now she seems to start up..run great for 10-15 seconds then dial down a bit to almost sounding like it's going to drop out or stall..anyone know what this issue could be??

+1 Great work getting this far considering I saw where you started!

I am no expert, but I can't help but think the CIS is worth investigating. All it would take is a hard/cracked hose and it can be temperamental.

Isn't it a relief when your engine first springs to life.  Well done. Don't be tempted to fiddle too much with the tuning. You're likely to get things very much out of whack.  Perhaps adjust the big idle screw on the left side near the throttle linkage until it idles comfortably and then leave it alone.   Get it to a mechanic who knows Porsche CIS.  A full service including fuel system, ignition timing and valve adjustment should get it running like a train.  Good luck.

Well it's not the plugs..I've tested ohms on them and cleaned them again and replaced them back..it's really strange that it starts up and idles at a good range then completely decides to bog itself..I'm thinkin maybe it's the CIS also.

ill have a bit more of a play tomorrow also strange that the first 2-4 times I turned it over it ran nice until I turned it off

still also got some cosmetic stuff to fix

The faster initial idle speed is controlled by the warm-up regulator.  They are known to fail over time. If it's degraded then idle control can be erratic. Also,  if the mixture is off then it can stall easily if the idle drops too quickly.  That's about the limit of my knowledge on CIS.

Going to have to read up on some CIS I think

Well done.  Made good progress there.  Here's a bit of bedtime reading.

Could be a vacuum leak. A cracked hose, loose clamp, leaks around the intake manifold (suction side), etc.

Yeh she is starting quite well now ,starts like a charm every time smoke is minimal guess a lot of oil has probably seeped through the engine from 15 years of sleep..on a roll now...electrics are coming together got power windows and interior lights going last night!

Drove it in and out of the garage instead of pushing it like I have been the last 6 months! Quite proud of myself seeing I've never worked on engines let alone European electrics..converting a LHD harness to RHD by myself.

safe to say I know this car inside out..think I'm ready to restore another!
