Porsche = SOLD OUT

Well no, they are not that kind of sold out.. but I do find myself quite fascinated with Porsche's global demand situation right now.

It doesn't seem to matter if you're in the new vehicle market, 356, 911 old or new and the list goes on.

I would go as far to say they've created a market phenomenon that doesn't seem to exist with any other manufacturer of similar scale... sure they have their share of redheaded step kids but look at this:

You want an Aussie delivered AC coupe - you better have a crystal ball, super powers and a fat wallet

You want a nice longhood - you will need a time machine

You want a Targa? - no worries you can have one for december 2014 Coupe prices

You want a new Cayman GT4 - you can't have one we sold all those, but hey we're still letting the press review the car you cannot buy to hype up more "sales"

You want a new GT3 RS -  Oh we sold more than we have allocations, sorry here is your deposit back but would you like to buy a used regular GT3 at above MSRP?

You want a new Macan - sure wait 6-12 months while we build that for you and there is no discount! Also we do have a used 2014 that we can sell you for above MSRP

RS of ANY kind - I have no words... Wolf of Wall street comes to mind though...

Ok, I've made my point clear...

I recently watched a documentary on SBS about gaming machines, I found the science behind it very interesting. Basically they found that a problem gambler going to play the machines has a similar set of behaviours & conditions and it triggers the release of dopamine in your body in the same manner as a drug addict anticipating their next hit.

There are similar conditions for buying a Porsche: Desire, Anticipation, Anxiousness, time to the reward and of course the reward!

So I wonder about that ^^

Or maybe we're all just very good at drinking the Kool Aid!

These are really just mindless ramblings of mine.... but you may feel compelled to respond and tell me I am crazy or not? It'll make an interesting discussion either way. :)

If it makes you feel better I have a mate that put a deposit down for one of the new V8 Mustang GT's about 6 months ago.

He was just informed his delivery date will be March 2017.

Meanwhile - I've just been told my GT4 delivery has been delayed again :( Every delay makes you panic that it will never come!

About that ^^ we spent a couple of weeks in the new Mustang whilst in the US Sep/Oct. My mrs didn't think it was too bad of a car, they quote $65k for the 5.0 GT... pretty good in my books. I went to the local Ford dealer to ask and got told 2017 if you're lucky.... now you say that, its probably more like 2018

That's some next level sh*t... at least they are not saying NO like Porsche... :D

I have got no idea what is pushing the global p-car demand other than perhaps it's something to do with the fact they are great cars. But I do have a bit of insight into gaming machines and the only thing I can say about the SBS documentary is it was a prime example of not letting the true facts get in the way of a good story.

I cannot say it changed my perception of them, everything I have conceded as fact was confirmed, so if it was meant to be anti gaming machine propaganda... it wasn't very good at it.

PS - My bad it was ABC if anyone wants to watch it.

My Mrs is mighty pissed off about the delivery dates for the V8 Mustang, she's had one as a hire car for her last couple of US trips and wanted one here. Asked about placing an order while her XR5 was in for a service to be told late 2016 at the earliest (this was 4 months ago), along with unable to confirm the price other than 'list, whatever that happens to be by the time it's delivered'.  She wants to replace the XR before the end of the FY, seems she'll have to order something else.

making the GT4 and GT3RS limited run is baffling to me.. there's aren't THAT many buyers that the model would get diluted or common place lol.
the GT4 especially in this respect! why wouldn't it be freely available like a regular GT3?

They've always made the RS cars in limited numbers and I think when production on the 991 RS ceases people will be amazed at how many they've actually made as I think the numbers will be north of what they've previously made.

They only made 1200 996 and 997 GT2s, 600 996 RS', 4000 7.1 and 7.2 GT3 RS and 600 4.0s.  They are only making limited production run of the GT4 as its being made on Porsche's GT production line which is separate from the main line of cars.

Sales guy at PCB yesterday said he is effectively an order taker.  Guys rock in and say "just get me one" meaning GT3, GT4, RS.  They pay pay full price no questions asked even for $400k+ RS.  It's a game of being in the lucky few who are allocated a car.  Porsche can name their price.

He also reckons one guy bought 2 GT4, one for road and one for track......

I remember AP saying in an interview something along the lines of the GT department being Porsche's way to "have fun", not necessarily to make money. Well, we all know they can't pull the wool over our eyes about the making money part, but it does make you wonder. Even if they built twice as many GT cars as they do, they'd still be a pretty rare thing comparatively.

I feel fortunate to have a GT car parked in the garage, even if it is the ugly duckling bastard child of the lot, because I wouldn't have been able to afford current prices if I had waited a little longer. That being said, i'm starting to find the Porsche hype a bit annoying! I know, I know, this is good for all Porsche owners, but there was something attractive about them being good bang for buck, and that's well and truly dead now.

If you havent seen the following Chris Harris video comparing the 991 RS to the Aston GT12 to the Macca 650S, firstly its a great watch, secondly he does draw some valid points about the value of an RS. Watch it if you haven't. Id still want the RS over the others regardless, so maybe there is something wrong with us all!

Very interesting video. Appears the the 650S is all things to all men. Quicker on the track, comfortable & quiet when you want it to be, the roof comes off & it looks stunning.

So if the only of actually owning an RS is to pay large over's & that puts it at 650S money then I recon the Fat Cats & Lotto winners have some thinking to do. Poor them.

Or just buy both. There, problem solved.

The sad thing is...the RS (and the GT3 for that matter) is built to be used on the track. That's its specific purpose. Yet how many of the new cars will never ever see the track? Plenty. They have become less of the right tool for the job and more of a garage trophy. The "I have to have one just to have one" sort of thing.

Really, i'm just incredibly bitter about the whole thing because I can neither afford one, nor buy one if I had the means.

They are all outstanding motor cars that I appreciate and admire greatly ,,,but unfortunately   they are way out of my price range .......I did enjoy the video ,,Chris Harris always does a great  job with these shot outs ..................... :D

The GT3 RS still has the subtlety of a 911 just with some beautiful race style detailing, I just love it and it looks so so right IMO. In contrast, the Aston looks like they have taken a standard car and just bolted on orange coloured bits, it looks way less stylish and sophisticated in my view (highly un-Aston characteristic). Give me a standard Aston over one of these any day, god knows how badly it will date (of not already). No offence intended if that's your vibe - its just not for me.

As for the Mclaren, well I'm not a footballer so that's probably why this car interests me the least.....................I'm sure its a great car to drive but again, its no RS. ;)

If we were all just interested in bang for buck we would all have Datsun GTR's, but we all know Porsche's have something that very few manufactures have and unfortunately its something that is becoming highly valuable - heritage + a timeless appeal. If you don't agree you can start graphing the depreciation of the competition (with a few exceptions), for some reason Porsche's are bucking the trend and ironically are becoming 'sold out' as a result of not becoming 'sold out'? Or at least that's what it seems......................

Interesting topic for discussion though, glad I'm only interested in the cheap shitty old ones. :D

^^^ couldn't agree more regarding the styling of Aston, horrid looking thing. The aero looks like it was purchased from Bunnings and slapped on with a bit of paint.

One point as to why people love the RS that Harris blatantly overlooks in the video (never let the truth get in the way of a good story) is that the car gives "race-car for the street" feeling to the owner. The Mclaren does not, and it was not built for this purpose. It's apples with oranges. Entertaining though.
