dragon02 Posted 11November, 2015 Report Share Posted 11November, 2015 Anyone else has the following issue - driving home last evening, the horn would activate every time I made a turn on the steering wheel greater than half-lock? Was a rather embarrassing drive home ;-)
Russ Posted 11November, 2015 Report Share Posted 11November, 2015 Pull the steering wheel and have a look for the wire that comes up through the column, also have a look at the contacts on the back of the horn padI had the same issue but mine was from a very quick reassembly for a test drive
ByronBayChris Posted 11November, 2015 Report Share Posted 11November, 2015 Remember to disconnect battery and wait 20 minutes prior to pulling wheel with airbag off.

TE911 Posted 12November, 2015 Report Share Posted 12November, 2015 HAHAHA i feel you pain it gets really embarrassing! Had the same problem with the Boxster the horn made a sound from any small bump on the road, turning the wheel like yours and sometimes when braking. The horns rubber bushing had perished.Sent it to my mechanic and he said it was a common issue and easy to fix. 993 Posted 17November, 2015 Report Share Posted 17November, 2015 The airbag/ horn press (which weighs a fair bit) is sitting in a metal bracket with rubber bushes that wear over time.Once the bushes have worn, then the airbag/ horn press will close the circuit when you go over bumps/ turn the corner (ie - the same as you pushing the horn). There are 2 different models for the airbag/ horn push and each has its own bracket.Unfortunately Porsche one supplies one model of the metal brackets (which is the same as used for the 996/ Boxster). So if you have the earlier airbag/ horn press, then Porsche can't help you with a metal bracket that fits, and instead will recommend that you update to the new airbag/ horn press (about $1K!). This leaves you with 2 options. The first is to buy the later model metal bracket and press out the rubber bushes and seat them in the old bracket (you'll need a press to do that) or alternatively, Zimms in the US can supply the rubber bushes only. If end up up pressing in the new bushes to your old bracket, make sure that you use something like locktite to keep them in place.I impressed Darren at Autocoupe with my knowledge of the above and Zimms as a supply source! dragon02 Posted 18November, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 So the verdict is in - culprit is the clock spring. So not a cheap fix but has to be done nonetheless, at least for roadworthy sake (I did contemplate living without a horn).
P-Kay Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Lots of DYI options that actually work!Mine was going off when sitting in the heat and very rare occasions hard bumps (low suspension)I ended up going for the silicone approach on my 996 as outlined through the Pelican forums.Happy to offer any guidance if needed
