Steve88 Posted 17November, 2015 Report Share Posted 17November, 2015 Hey guys anyone know the a good website to pick up a mono steering wheel . Also is there much involved in changing it over ? Ive got a 1980 911 does it require like a converter or anything ? Also how does it work with the horn or do you select a wheel with a horn ect.. Is it DIY?Also has anyone got access to a replacement key or know where i can buy blanks . I would like a black plastic one with porsche written on it . The one I've got currently is a little crapy . They seem to worth a tad but how much should i be paying for it ?Finally any idea where i can order the rubber that surrounds the glass on the side mirrors . It feels weathered and looks not so flash . Once again any advice would be greatly appreciated.Steve
Russ Posted 17November, 2015 Report Share Posted 17November, 2015 don't know where to easily buy a momo - you'll need an adapter for your wheel obviously and you can just buy horn buttons for most of their wheels to wire inKey blanks here:Regular:http://www.sierramadrecollection.com/Repairs-and-Upgrades/Key-Blanks-and-Accessories/Engine-Door-Key-Blank-911-914-930-912E-p18839.htmlValet:https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/porsche-key-blank-914-911-912-74443007001Not sure on the mirror surrounds either as I thought they were NLA, would be keen to see if you find somewhere with them.Could always try the *gulp* dealer for key blanks

PhilH Posted 17November, 2015 Report Share Posted 17November, 2015 Steve, I just took a MOMO "Corse" steering wheel off my car today, to put an original back on. The horn button for that is in the centre of the wheel and from what I know the wheel and horn were just a direct swap.

Now that the Aussie dollar is busted, it's worth comparing against local sites. I was looking at steering wheels the other day and once you'd take into account shipping and dollar conversion it was the same price to get one here, as well as being quicker on delivery (haven't got the sites I was looking at with me … sorry, just get your google on). You're also going to need a 27mm socket and a small extension. For keys, you can order in, or ring your local dealership and ask who they recommend to cut keys. Up in Brisbane the guys they recommend had blanks on hand and were quite surprised when I brought my own in.As far as I'm aware, the rubber mirror surrounds aren't available as a stand-alone part, you have to buy the whole fixture that includes the mirror and motor. Have a look on Sierra Madre or Pelican for the parts, but they're expensive (maybe $400-$450 each side). I had to replace mine as well, and managed to track down a second hand set of mirrors which were in much better condition. I decided that I was OK with not perfect given the cost, but if it annoys you, you're stuck spending a relatively big chunk of change.Don't be bashful about hitting up your local dealership, there's much of talk of how expensive they are, but I've not found that to be the case. When you order parts from Porsche you don't pay any shipping and you get the full local warranty on the part.As an example, I had to replace my lighter assembly because it was corroded and fused together, unrepairable and blowing the fuse that also controls the front blower. All the usual online parts places list the lighter assembly as NLA so I started looking for a second hand one. I found one out of the USA for $150 plus shipping and it was hardly in the greatest condition. Before I pulled the trigger I gave the parts guy at Porsche Centre Brisbane a yell just to check whether he could track one down for me -- in stock in Melbourne, $66 including GST, no shipping or delivery and it was waiting for me to pick up at 10am the next day. Thanks Craig. It's not always going to work out that well, but when I'm doing parts orders now, I email a list to Porsche in the same way that I compare all the online suppliers. I reckon about half the time my orders go through Porsche.Hope that helps. lol thanks Russ . Any difference between the Valet and Regular part from colour ?? The valet shouldn't allow access to the glove box, not sure how exactly that works -- if it's a function of the blank or how the blank is cut. Russ Posted 17November, 2015 Report Share Posted 17November, 2015 I'm pretty sure it's a function of how the blank is cut, there's a slight difference between them that locks the valet key out of the glovebox (and boot lock if fitted)
Blue964 Posted 17November, 2015 Report Share Posted 17November, 2015 I got my momo and hub from an ebay retailer out of Adelaide. Very competitive price and quick delivery. SimonR Posted 17November, 2015 Report Share Posted 17November, 2015 Thanks for the help guys . Really want to organise the key , i think i can wait for the steering wheel I found prioritising really hard. I've still got parts I bought more than a year ago that I haven't put on yet. My best advice is to deal with the most annoying stuff first. The smell of burning oil on the heat exchanger gets to be a drag pretty quick, steering wheel not so much! There'll be plenty of minor things that pop up along the way too. I just re-ran a new speedo cable because the old one gave out. Stuff like that takes priority over things like replacing the mirrors (which I still have sitting in a box). I've got little kids too which limits the time I have to spend fettling. All fun though, and the reward of driving it makes up for it all!
