LeeM Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Repost from another thread (idiot) As some know, I prefer the look of a Cayman to a 911 (by a smidge) I just drove a 2006 Cayman S for the first time (first modern Porsche actually). I get it now. I absolutely get the hype about them. Holy shitballs, they go a bit! What a car. What a damn good car! In all honesty, being over 6 foot, its a little cramped (and picking 3rd instead if 1st and stalling the thing as I left the driveway. Knob!), yet its a very small consolation for a car that I will absolutely most definately own in the future. MANY thanks to Craig at Buiks for allowing me to drive it. Getting back in the van was like slitting my wrists! This be the car Quote Edit Options Go to top
ANF Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Well done! I love them too and makes a great alternative to an A/C 911 Interesting about the over 6 foot thing, so you fitted ok?? (curious, from a fellow over 6 foot type)
LeeM Posted 18November, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Yep, I'm probably 6' 1 I spose (around 187cm ish) Only annoying thing was my left leg felt a bit cramped, and I felt a bit too close to the steering wheel, as I usually like to stretch the arms out.I got used to it within a couple of minutes, and actually thought I could live with it, yet that could have just been a bit of excitement at actually driving a newer Porsche. I can only imagine what a GT3 or something like that is like! It's very compact, yet I loved the cockpit layout. I've only driven my 912 (very briefly), an SC and a 944, so I'm not very experienced to make a good judgement I'd need a longer drive to be sure ( Is it free early Sunday morning for coupla hours Craig? ), yet I reckon it would be fine. It wasnt a long drive, yet you can just feel how well it would handle in the hills, and the engine....man it just shoves you back in the seat! I didnt even get close to hard throttle and it just took off! Sounded great tooHad 2 kids waving like mad at it, and a rather attractive girl in a Mazda having a long look. Dunno if it was the car or my George Clooney looks though (grey hair is the only comparison there!)
ANF Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Pretty much same height! Your Porsche driving experience about matches mine... Driven a 928 and a Cayenne, been a passenger in a 911 (thanks Tazzie!) and sat in a Boxster (which was quite comfy, probably very similar to the Cayman?) LeeM Posted 18November, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Was just talking (blabbering) to the missus about it. For me, I couldnt live with it as a daily if I was in a job that did the daily freak hour traffic (I'm a tradie, so its a van everyday) yet as a weekender, I'd be in the hills most of the time. The missus doesnt drive a manual, so thats a bonus!
Arnage Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Hi LeeI used to have a Boxster back in 2000. A work car (car allowance), I am 6" & an easy fit for me & it was just the best everyday car. Chased the arse of it most of the time, never went wrong, predictable, fun, sounded great etc. Just loved it. Traded it for a C4S in 2002(2mth old), also for the same work purposes, didn't last long, sent out the wrong messages to my customers. Loved the Boxster more, so I also have your desire for a Cayman as I think they are such a great looking car.
IXELEVEN Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Yes, the Cayman is a great car. I've owned an 'S Sport' and a 'R'. Given the fact that I've driven close to all variants of the 911 including ALL GT and RS models, I can say for me, 911 GT & RS cars aside, the Cayman is the better sporting option for the road.ENJOY! LeeM Posted 18November, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 Dunno whats going on with quoting posts today! Oh wellNice to hear that from someone who has experienced various cars, cheers for thatIf I had the means, I wouldve bought this one today, yet reality sank in when i hopped back in the van I'll get one in the future
MFX Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 I have unfortunately sold on my Cayman S now, but it was a really fun car to drive. Mine was lowered and had a Remus exhaust which sounded awesome, but as a daily driver, it just wasn't comfortable or practical. I have since "downgraded" to an Audi S5, which is newer, faster, and 10x more comfortable, with all of the bells and whistles that the CS didn't have.I got to do the great ocean rd in the CS and it was amazing. The thing just grips and goes. As a weekend blaster it would be great, and it looked fantastic, but I wouldn't be that comfortable with it on the track, as I would always be worried about something going wrong and being hideously expensive to fix. Hence my reason for an old 911 hot rod.
Barks Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 I've had my Cayman S for about 18 months now..I use it as an every day car and find it extremely practical. As I also use it for work I usually park it out of sight when I visit a site or customer! I still look back at it when I walk away, love the looks, love the grunt..just needs a Niko type exhaust! Mine was too low and firm (particularly for the bumpy roads in the highlands), and the radio was drowned out by the exhaust .I still did love looking back at it when I walked away though

tazzieman Posted 18November, 2015 Report Share Posted 18November, 2015 The Cayman is very similar to the 928 in corner feel and confidence. Definitely consider one of these when I'm too old to work on the old cars! They are fabulous on track, really good fun.

LeeM Posted 19November, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 19November, 2015 I dunno, maybe I'm just TOO Porsche biased, as theres no way I'd buy anything else, no matter how practical it is. A friend bought a crazy fast Audi something that is so comfortable and does everything but wash itself (dunno what it is as I'm not really interested), yet just MY opinion here, its an Audi which just looks like any other european sedan or sports wagon. Great cars no doubt, but not for me. A Porsche stands out for what it is, a great sports car, and you have to DRIVE it, not just point it in the general direction of travel and arrive at your destination. I'd rather drive the shit out of it, listen to a flat 6 howling its heads off and arrive with a stupid grin on my face and say 'I own that!', but thats me. I'd still own a Panamera or Cayenne over anything else if I wanted a more sedate every day car, yet there's my Porsche biased coming in again. I've been a passenger in a couple of Ferrari's and some other quick modern cars which were all very quick (the 430 was bonkers!), yet this Cayman has made me more of a Porsche fan than I was 24 hours ago (even water cooled stuff which I had no interest in to be honest), so it is inevitable that I will definately own one of these (or a 911 I could afford and turn it into a race rep thing) when I'm bored with the 912. Thats what I like about people and cars. We all have different taste, yet mine is a Porsche. There is no substitute

Stew F Posted 20November, 2015 Report Share Posted 20November, 2015 As I also use it for work I usually park it out of sight when I visit a site or customer! A bit OT, but if you drive an "expensive" car in Australia you're obviously ripping someone off. In other countries people seem to respect the fact that you are "successful", but not here. I drove my 911 to work one day when I was at a particular customer's site while working with one of my colleagues. He parked next to me in his 2015 Landcruiser Sahara V8 diesel thingo. When he came in he said "you shouldn't drive that car to work. It doesn't look good with the customers". We're talking a $100k+ car v's my SC. Just my $0.02 worth. SteveF Posted 20November, 2015 Report Share Posted 20November, 2015 You are absolutely right Stew. It is a perception thing. I had to move my car at work the other day and the maintenance guy saw me and said that they must be paying me too much. His Commondore costs much more than my car!
