Pork Chops Posted 25November, 2015 Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 Per the image I'm in the market for one of these. Any issues with this wheel regarding the 350mm diameter and the gauges being obscured, or the wheel effort being too much at low speed (non power steering) or anything else?Assuming all of the above being OK, anyone got one for sale (black spokes)? A similar Arbath would be OK too. If not where is the best place to purchase? US pricing is on par with local suppliers give or take $10 and they seem to be about $350.Thanks. tazzieman Posted 25November, 2015 Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 The new Momo wheel grips are quite thin and the leather likewise. Personally I am not bothered by the slight gauge obscuration or the steering effort. The price is pretty much constant though sometimes they are FS on ebay 2nd hand. But they are always snapped up! Tit Posted 25November, 2015 Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 Yep. They slightly obscure. Depends a lot on your sitting position as well.Grip is quite skinny. I got my momo stuff at demon-tweaks.co.uk.Not sure if there's a PFA sponsor that sells these??
Harvs11 Posted 25November, 2015 Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 I've pondered this as well. They are designated as 350mm diameter. Can someone please advise the actual measurement of the inside diameter of the rim? ie the visible area

It could be my error but maybe drop me a PM if you can and I can reply? Thanks. I bought one from Autosport from Adelaide for $350 incl freight. Will be in Melbourne tomorrow according to the tracker so that's a good result. Current boss should fit so that's good news. andrew911 Posted 25November, 2015 Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 yes, they obscure, but even the original wheel if you are taller ..... I rotate the gauges, but found it much better to use a mobile phone with speedo apps there are so many free apps for this
TE911 Posted 25November, 2015 Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 Hope my picture helps. It does obscure the gauges but like everyone has already said you can rotate them or get a app, I have a heads up display speedo which was installed by the previous owner. Will buy one of these embossed leather horn buttons to lift the presentation.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-embossed-leather-cup-for-MOMO-horn-button-/321777524741+1 on the leather horn button. andrew911 Posted 25November, 2015 Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 Which app works well for you?I use Speed Box and Speed HUD ... I have used many others but did not like the display layout or fonts, so it comes down to personal preference also, both of these have the HUD mode so I can use them at night and just chuck the phone on the dash
Stew F Posted 25November, 2015 Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 Phil H has just replaced his Prototipo with another wheel. He might be interested in selling. No harm in asking.
Pork Chops Posted 25November, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 25November, 2015 Phil H has just replaced his Prototipo with another wheel. He might be interested in selling. No harm in asking. Thanks but I've pulled the trigger on a new one. Think they sell fairly sharpish so would be OK to buy new, but thanks for the heads up Whats needed to do this conversion . WheelHub Boss KitScewsHorn Button? The wheel comes with the screws and horn. You will need to buy a boss separately and if you're particular you may wish to upgrade the horn button so it's not momo branded. That's it. I use Speed Box and Speed HUD ... I have used many others but did not like the display layout or fonts, so it comes down to personal preference also, both of these have the HUD mode so I can use them at night and just chuck the phone on the dash Thanks will investigate. Got the phone on the dash anyhow so this is a better solution than turning the speedo which to my tastes looks a bit silly.
Pork Chops Posted 25April, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 25April, 2016 OK, so I'm back to this topic. I've lived with my Prototipo for a while now and though it's very pretty I don't like it as it's too small. It obscures the gauges which I find annoying. Yes I use a dash mounted phone for a speedo but isn't it supposed to be a pleasure to look at those beautiful 911 gauges? I feel that way. Also with non assisted steering the wheel is too heavy for me. Even at 2nd gear corner speeds it's too heavy to enjoy properly. From what I can see there is little choice between 350mm and 380mm diameter wheels. I believe that the original wheel in these cars was 380mm, but did read it can foul the legs (I'm 175cm tall)? The other challenge is that there are few wheels in the 380mm size and the 2 I can find that have black spokes (a must as I have a cork interior) are dished and suede. I guess the suede is OK as it's a very occasional use car and typically I like a wheel to be closer so the 65mm dish might be OK (dish might help with leg fouling). I guess I can live with the look, but I wasn't going for the hotrod look but you can't have it all unless you pay apparently. Other choices I've not thought of? Anyone got an original wheel they want to sell me?Lastly there are 2 wheels that seem readily available. A Sparco ($349) and a Velo ($249) and to me they look the same so can't see why I'd pay more for the Sparco unless I'm missing something. You can buy the Sparco for cheaper at Demon Tweaks but unless there is a reason why it's better than the Velo can't see why I'd bother. I will be blacking out both logos Am I missing something? Images below of the wheels and of the Sparco in situ in a very tasty light green SC that is currently for sale.Thoughts on all of the above?EDIT farking photobucket pain in the arse. I can't post pics so will upload later when it's working properly. Grrr.

Pork Chops Posted 26April, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 26April, 2016 so you selling the prototypo?I will be if I get a replacement wheel. I'll keep you in mind right? I have another 350mm Momo wheel which I'll be selling too. I can provide more details later so let me know if you're interested.
BlitzKonig Posted 26April, 2016 Report Share Posted 26April, 2016 Too heavy steering? What size front tyres do you have? My car is non assisted and 235 fronts and my partner doesnt seem to have much issues with it (Tiny little girl). I assume you had a factory wheel before hand? The thing with suede that annoys me is maintenance and durality with comparsion to leather. There is a reason one is used more over the other. Do the Velvo and Sparco use the same boss kit as Momo? Material different between the two? Depth? Personally they are on the same par to me. I did not have a factory wheel on the car so cannot make a direct comparison. I understand that both wheels are made in Italy and the Velo is an Autosport brand so hence cheaper and both use the Momo boss. Given how suede wears probably go the cheaper wheel and replace as required. Driving comfort must come first.
SC 3.2 Posted 26April, 2016 Report Share Posted 26April, 2016 Steering heavy? have you had a wheel alignment done recently? Also how old are your tyres-something we tend to overlook on cars doing a minimal annual mileage.Older tyres tend to create heavy s/wheel effort but the steering on my SC (205s on the front)I would describe as relatively light.I fitted a 25mm spacer between my Prototipo and the boss, these gives slight improvements in knee clearance and gauge visibity

I've ordered a 380mm 65mm dished Velo wheel which looks like thisand this in car (although this is a Sparco they're hard to tell apart)Once I've fitted it top the car I'll let y'all know how I go. Car is off for paint tomorrow so that will be a June update.

Harvs11 Posted 26April, 2016 Report Share Posted 26April, 2016 Have you considered using an eccentric spacer on your 350mm wheel? This will do a few things, lift the wheel up from your legs, give back the view of the top of the dials, also provide a bit more leverage around the top of the wheel giving the effect of a larger diameter. The factory 380mm wheel is eccentric thus allowing it clear your legs. PS. heavy steering can be significantly lightened simply by adding 5 psi to your front tyres. It sounds obvious but it's often overlooked.
SC 3.2 Posted 26April, 2016 Report Share Posted 26April, 2016 Yes,good comment and has the added bonus of reducing the inherent understeer with larger rear tyres......worked for me anyhow.
