Pfitz911 Posted 1December, 2015 Report Share Posted 1December, 2015 My dash unit for ventilation has some plastic broken off on the corner. Have been looking for a replacement fascia for it as the mechanism is fine...cannot find a thing anywhere. Does anyone know about what a good option is? Perhaps plastic can be fixed as it's just the corner.frustrating because every single other item for the interior is readily available!! Cheers guys

Pfitz911 Posted 1December, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 1December, 2015 I'll try to take one tomorrow, but it's the unit in the dash where you control the fans etc (next to the radio)
Dreamr Posted 1December, 2015 Report Share Posted 1December, 2015 From what I understand, you need to replace the entire control unit with the cables and all ... I don't think you can just replace the facia itself ...Maybe take it to someone that does plastic welding ... they might be able to repair it for you.Otherwise if you are going to replace the entire unit, make sure the part you buy is from the same car as yours .... they do differ on different models ...Hope this helps ..... Pfitz911 Posted 1December, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 1December, 2015 Thanks matei heard its a PIA to get this unit out. Maybe I'll do some research into plastic welding, don't know much about that one.any other ideas?
Caledonian Posted 1December, 2015 Report Share Posted 1December, 2015 Dreamer is correct, I tried but could find no listing for the plastic facia separately. My one is broken also and trying to find one never mind a good one is not going to be easy. The common problem they appear to suffer from is the bulb holders distort from the heat of the bulbs, this could be repaired depending on how bad they are. I picked one up from eBay for around $40 but it cost me $80 in postage as it came from Germany, but still worth it. Not really a fun job to remove either, that's probably why I still have not gotten round to fitting it.....
OZ930 Posted 1December, 2015 Report Share Posted 1December, 2015 Just completed this exercise myself. I had to replace the unit and build a lamp holder. The unfortortunate thing about this is that it is a big (not complicated) exercise, just an exercise in anger management……..which I failed a couple of times. Best to walk away, otherwise you can break something. The design itself is flawed. Riveting plastic onto a metal frame is just dumb and probably the main reason they are not sold separately….read profit.Depending on how badly broken the facia is, you may be able to undo the the retaining nut that holds the unit in and push it out enough to work on. Using a good epoxy you can build the broken corner up then dremel it into shape, then paint. 5 minute araldite doesn't stick too well to this type of plastic so don't bother. If you can't build it up in situ then its an all out job. Radio out, ventilation grill, trunk divider?, vent tubes, vent drain, unplug the fan wiring, vent unit and fan. Only need to undo/unclamp (careful not to lose the clamps) three cables in the trunk so don't get carried away and undo everything. Flow dividers can stay in situ, although you may have take the top vent off depending on how flexible you are. I took mine off . Take care not to lose the clamps. Take note of where the cables run (through) the firewall and in the trunk. Just makes it easier to re-instal.Wiring to the unit uncludes an earth (brown wire) and a wire to the glove box light and lights. one light stays with the unit. Change to LEDS when re-installing. No heat and melting issues. With a bit of practice you can have the unit out in 20-30 minutes. How do I know……..grrrrrrr !! Anger management techniques applied here !! I think it was Jack and Coke. From what I understand, you need to replace the entire control unit with the cables and all ... I don't think you can just replace the facia itself ... Sorry Dreamr, but, no you don't. Cables are clamped to the control unit and can be detached…..after the unit is out.Good Luck
Scott930 Posted 1December, 2015 Report Share Posted 1December, 2015 Change to LEDS when re-installing. No heat and melting issues. Which LED lamps did you use, and do they substitute for all dash lamps? Mine are all Ok, but I am interested in lack of heat to prevent any issues down the track.. Cheers guysIf you need to detach the fascia you can drill the rivet on the side where it's clenched over, then either re rivet it, or just use some bolts & nyloc nuts. JBWeld KwikPlastic is good for those kind of parts. If you need someone to stand around and drink beer while you do it yell out.

Pfitz911 Posted 2December, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 2December, 2015 Yeah probably, but whats the alternative? buy a complete second hand unit? seems rediculous when its 20 cents worth of plastic. Maybe Ill try taking the fascia off and finding some guy who rejuvinates these sort of things...NFI where I'd go mind you...

Maybe you could get a new one 3D printed. Properly, not with one of those home jobbies. There are a couple of places in Adelaide that can print it in a number of different plastics. I also know a guy who would do the CAD model for you for the price of a couple of Carlbergs. Just finished your last beer, when are you coming back ?? Possibly in February or March. Russ Posted 2December, 2015 Report Share Posted 2December, 2015 seems like there's a market for manufacturing the fascias (assuming they're NLA from Porsche - has anyone tried?)this thread is perfectly timed as mine has disintegrated so much the bulb is sitting on top of my center console
