Audi Extended warranty worth it?

edgy

Recommended Posts

Our little Audi A1 is out of warranty in a couple of weeks, have owned it since new and its been a reliable little car. I have the option to extend the factory warranty whilst it is still under warranty.

We plan to keep it a few years longer, has anyone experience with this? I really don't think its going to be worth a lot of money in years to come, I fear should something go bad with it it'll cost more to repair than the damn car is worth.  But at the same time its really not going to do too much in the way of mileage either.

This is what they charge for it

A1, A3, A4 (excl. Allroad), Q3, TT & TTS
Single Payment
(12 months)
Additional 1 Year / 160,000km
$1,885
Additional 2 Years / 160,000km
$3,050
Additional 3 Years / 160,000km
$4,395
Additional 4 Years / 160,000km
$5,955

 Cheers

Seems like a lot but then again I guess that's the price of the modern car "club". You won't be doing m,any miles , yet you'll have to replace tyres on age so the sums may not make sense. But if you like the car , costs are irrelevant. Just ask anyone with an old classic ;)

Many true words, the issue is I don't "like" the car. So money is relevant.

To me its just like white goods really and I do not have a relationship with it like my other cars, they have personality this car doesn't.

okay I'll stop because I am starting to sound weird.

Not weird at all. Normal I would say. My problem is that many modern cars are too "model perfect" ; I prefer things with character that speaks of experiences.

I get my adrenaline kicks from other things :)

Ditch the whitegood and buy a reliable modern classic with a personality.

What annoys me about that pricing is that you pay the same for an A1 as a TTS, how does that make any sense?!

Say you keep it for 4 years and don't drive it much, I'd be surprised if you got hit with a bill for $6k to fix something, but I suppose it can happen. I'd risk it, wait four years, and if nothing went wrong consider that a windfall and go buy a new TV or something. :D

On a slightly more sensible note... I wonder if there is a "third party" warranty you can get with the same coverage but cheaper? I presume you'd have to spend two weeks reading fine print to compare them though...

Not many modern cars talk to me, our Macan turbo gets delivered next August... and that is a hell of a car (I'd not of ordered it otherwise) those feelings may change but you really do need a good practical family car, so I really don't care what becomes of this little A1... it is a good little A-B car and all and FAR better than any Japanese equivalent. BUT I will resent the bastard like a red headed stepchild if it costs me a good chunk of dough outside of warranty!

You make a lot of good points and I am a gambling man.... those 3rd party warranties never end well for anyone except the company supplying them.

My son was going through the list of affordable new cars and nothing floated his boat other than a Toyota 86 - as close to my old 911 as you can get , driveability wise.

He absolutely loves it, but isn't keen on lending it :(

Good mate of mine has one of those 86's... its an excellent drive! Especially for the price, cost of ownership etc.

I'd bet that you'll come out in front not insuring.  Must be lots of non-dealer specialists in Sydney that would repair at reasonable rates?

If it's a computer or a screen or some other expensive bit that fails then the internet makes the world your shopping oyster.

If you have done only low km's and with full dealer service I reckon Audi will take care of you for a year after your warranty expires if you kick up a stink anyway...

Fortune favors the brave.

I was recently offered  an extended warranty scheme on a used car by  Inchcape which relies on committing to a maintenance schedule with their affiliated service centres.  Basic cover is free up front but you pay for the services. You need to do the sums to see if it's worthwhile for your car.

Edgy, our A1 just reached that point in October and I thought long and hard about extending.  I opted not to.

The car has been a great performer and the figures just didn't add up. I felt the cost to extend was over the top.  I think they're still a gimmick not dissimilar to  extended warranties they try to flog off with appliances.

Ultimately, it's a gamble. You take it and you're gambling something will happen, Audi is gambling it won't.  Even with it, if something goes wrong, you're at the whim of Audi as to whether the defect is actually covered.

Edgy, we have a 2000 Toyota Corolla auto, had it 8 years its done 190k klms. Its our beach, airport, leave anywhere car and used pretty much every day.

Just service it once a years $150 or so, in all the time we have had it only needed a throttle cable, cam belt/water pump service & 2 batteries.

What a magic car that just does what it should all the time.

Swap you for that needy little German girl, problem solved.

Hope this helps.

Have owned many toyotas, great cars... Have a soft spot for 80's & 90's JDM Toyota :)

In terms of trading appliances; that would be like swapping Jura espresso machine for breville kettle.

Exactly, who's ever heard of a Breville kettle letting you down.

PM me your details ;)

Me! ours stopped working! :P

On the A1, judging by my last VAG disaster (mk6 GTI), I would sell the A1 and buy a korean equivalent (if its an appliance you need).

Scew Audi & VW!

Thanks for the feedback, is yours the 7 speed DCT?

I think we're missing the point here guys, I have not  had any dramas with the car letting me down.

Nothing wrong with a Hyundai (the new Toyota as you know) according to my sons who've had 100% reliability in 12 years' combined driving , and my wife is perfectly happy with the SUV - and the spare change for holidays. If you're trying to impress the neighbours or keep up with the schoolyard Jones's , that's a different matter. That sort of nonsense goes against logical and rational  thought processes.

In news just in , a colleague has just left my room after telling me his just out of warranty petrol Golf needs a new engine. He told the dealer that it was using excessive oil on several occasions (not in writing though...) but was brushed off each time. He didn't even make it to the "fill it up and bring it in after 1000k " test ; the critical low oil light came up.

The car has never smoked or smelt.

I will continue to urge my friends and rellies to stay well away from vag.

My sisters GTI Polo had this issue, she got the run around when it came time to repair it.
