WTB - 924 Turbo

Hi, as the heading implies, I'm looking for a 924 Turbo.

If anyone knows of one/has one in good condition and working order.

Ideal specs would include:

- 1981 or 1982 model

- Non sunroof

The condition of the car is really the most important criteria. The ideal specs just make it my personal unicorn quest, but aren't deal breakers.

Thanks.

Dreamr: yes saw that one on Gumtree and you are correct, it is what I seek. Very 80s colour to. Have enquired on it and it seems to be clean car, all original interior, etc. Just the wheels are from later 944 and not the  original honeycomb type ones. Wanted to see if there was anything else out there. I missed out on a silver 82 with sunroof up in QLD about a week ago.

KBGr4: thanks for the link- busy bidding activity.  Interesting to see what the reserve is.  I'm of two minds on  a 944 Turbo, harder to maintain, was thinking of a post 85 944 (standard; S or S2), but the 951s are amazing cars. See in your profile you had a 937. What was that like to drive? They are like hens teeth in RHD ... and prices to match these days.

The 924Gt was a distinctly  80's early turbo car, but fun whatever you think of the early turbo's, after all it was a homologation special for Porsche to enter Le Mans.

A nicely balanced car with amazing traction and still pretty impressive even today on the road. Unfortunately a lot of todays shopping cars have about as much power as the  Gt did  !   Driving was a matter of wait till boost builds and off it went, keep it on boost and it was a great drive. With only 406 built and allowing for the ravages of time and a number of indiscretions by owners the maybe 60% remain. Mine was delivered in Germany and moved to Japan after a couple of years, I acquired it in 2012 in a neglected state and refurbished  the necessary things to get it roadworthy. Being a LHD (hence 937) I finally  sold to the US and maybe one of these days with the market being what it is it might get back home to europe.

.did ya no peter brock raced one in the lamon

Yeah well technically,  but then again...

SPEEDCAFE: Tell us about your 1981 Le Mans entry

Hamilton: The car we took there to race was a Porsche 924 GT-R. We took a team with Peter Brock, Jim Richards and Colin Bond and it was a factory race car built for us to race at Le Mans. Tragically we had trouble in practice. The car was totally prepared out of Weissach (Porsche Competition Department) ready to race and painted up in green and gold. It was named Spirit of Australia, which was long before Qantas used the terminology.

About a month before the event the factory asked if they could pinch the gearbox out of our car to take as a spare part to another race meeting. New production gearboxes would be available shortly. So we said, ‘fine, that’s good and our car got a new Getrag gearbox for Le Mans’. Unfortunately they made a very small error in the tolerances of the gearbox and when the engine and gearbox heated up, it seized up the gearshift mechanism.

Brocky went out in the car first and got half way around his first lap and couldn’t change gears any more. Bondy went out and had a quick run but we finished up second reserve for the starting line and we didn’t get to start in the event itself which was tragic and I disappeared back to the Porsche factory feeling very grumpy.
