911 3.2 before and after

Recommended Posts

We just finished up what we would call a mechanical restoration of a customers 3.2. Jim's 911 had done about 400,000kms. It had also had a rebuild done quite a few years back in Hong Kong where Jim use to live before he imported it to Australia. The previous rebuild consisted of an aftermarket set of Ross racing pistons which were made from 2618 and as such were set with big piston to bore clearance. The results were that it would have quite a bit of piston slap when cold and over time wore the pistons and bores just enough to provide a permanent smoke screen. Jim decided it was time for a birthday and we got to work removing the engine and tearing it down. It was a bit old and sad but nothing we could not fix. The applicable parts were plated and we blasted and resprayed the tinware, Actually there was quite a lot of cleaning needed. Mechanically we installed a set of Mahle high comp 3.2 pistons and barrel set, new chains, tensioners and a seal kit. The valve guides were Klined and bought back to new. We even made auxiliary fan delete plate to clean up the LHS of the engine bay to match Jim's Pod filter he had installed. All in all it turned out quite well, Jim picked up the car 2 days ago and has already clocked over 1000kms since.

Sean

Hey Sean,

Engine looks great, I have a couple of questions if you can divulge:

  • Who do you use for your plating?
  • Who does the plating of the fan hub, re-riveting fan to hub & fan restoration?

I'm currently doing a restoration on my 81SC, any help with contacts or services you can offer would be appreciated.

I like your work.  Nicely detailed.

Which makes me think.  Maybe we should start a restoration thread where we can detail how various parts and assemblies are restored and finished.  That's a good question (#2) posted above by 81SC.

What's a ballpark figure$ for a build like this? Looks beautiful!

Set of Mahle 3.0 pistons & barrels - $2800 US.  Yet you can buy a set of Mahle 1600cc VW pistons & barrels for $155 US.  Extortion at it's finest.

Pelican Parts have an engine rebuild wizard that can cost it all out for you.  Includes Porsche tax. ;)

AA Performance Products in the USA were the cheapest, as they supply Pelican, Sierra Madre etc. A full AA 1720cc barrel and piston set for my 912 was $475US the last time I looked, and probably $200 to $300 dearer anywhere else. It was much easier for me to have the guys (Buik Motorworks) buy all my bits from Sierra Madre, as Pelican is always much higher with freight costs, and I get a full warranty (you don't if you supply parts yourself which is fair enough) Just the exchange rate and GST is the killer

The plating is done by a friend of ours, its more of an after hours hobby for him. Most of the time we go over and help him. Preparation is the key to a good outcome. In the past we have had some look great and some look a little flat.

We don't Re-rivit the fan anymore. This one is the 2nd generation fan and housing from Vertex in the states. They are a great looking unit and only about $1600+gst Being aluminium instead of magnesium is a big bonus and these don't deteriorate like the originals

This one came in just over 19K+gst. Being a 3.2 they have the stronger crankcase and have a less tendency to warp. this one was in great condition no machine work was needed on the crankcase. If it didn't need Pistons and barrels it would have been significantly cheaper still.

You don't have any others sitting around you want to sell do you?

No unfortunately, if i had some spares i would have them looking like this and hung on the wall.

I think to be fair there were probably a lot more VW pistons and barrels produced compared with the 911 variant. It could possibly be supply and demand. We sourced the piston set from BWA as it was cheaper then obtaining them from the states and paying for the conversion and import duties.

After you photoshopped on the smog pump of course?:)

Now don't fall over backwards boys and girls, but .......

If I had just spent $15 - 20k on my engine, I would have to think seriously about putting the smog pump back on .... it looks so beautiful done up that I wouldnt want to hide it with all of the "crap" that is in the way.

But fear not folks ..... I would put it all in a box to be kept with the car!

Before/After dyno?

Nice new engine. Beautiful pics. Should do another $400k (ex gearbox, running gear, electrics) but is it any better?

Oops - freudian slip. meant 400k kms.

Anything go fast about the build outside of high comp pistons?

are VW pistons cast and 911 ones forged?

They are cast.

Why did it need p&c?   Bore wear or some other damage?  I suppose at 400k we will have to accept some bore wear...

It had a previous rebuild back on Hong Kong years ago and they used a set of racing pistons, i say racing because of the material they picked (2118) is just not suitable for street driving. You must run a lot of clearance and the pistons will rock quite a lot causing premature wear of not only the rings but the pistons and bores.

No dyno for this one. The only other modification we put on is the 4 hole injectors that we use on the 3.2's. These give a better fuel economy and slightly more performance. I would say it is quite a bit better as the car was almost underivable beforehand with the smoke it produced.

Sean,

Bosch 0-280-155-715?  Have you ever done a comparison on a dyno with the standard 3.2 injectors to see what actual effect they have on the A/F ratio and power?

Thanks for the thread, interesting work for many of us!

Hi Peter,

Unfortunately its not the 715 but one of our own. I can let you know that the 715 too close to stock for a noticeable improvement, stock being 21.8lbs and the 715's being 22.45lbs. Ours add a nice small improvement across the entire range and probably the best way to describe it would be crisp. Sorry i cant divulge the exact part number of these injectors as we have done a lot of testing to get these right. We have even gone a step further here and have run a maf kit on a few of our 3.2's with a piggyback fuel and ignition controller, that way we can match the AFR's exactly to what we want while keeping the stock ECU and wiring.

Regards

Sean
