Porsche 944

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Brandon and I am new to this forum. I have just turned 15 and I am interested in buying a Porsche 944. My dad, 'Dreamr' recommended me to the forum to ask your thoughts on a car I am looking at buying. I have been looking for a while now and am convinced I have found the right one on carsales. It is a 1985 Porsche 944 (manual) in Victoria. It has been listed for a couple of months now and I am asking for any thoughts on the car. if anyone has had a look and can tell me anything about it, that would be helpful.

here is a link to the car:

Welcome to the forum Brandon (finally!)

The car looks nice and tidy although I would go with the original rims. It appears as though there has been a lot of work done although hopefully someone can take a look for you and if you are keen get a PPI (I am quite sure Dad has already told you to do this! ) The only thing that looks a little nasty is the very cracked dash. This link may also be helpful with your search:

I reckon you should should ask Dad to sell his Cayenne (to me) and go for a '86 + year car with the new dash like this one:

Good luck with the search. If you don't find one I know of a really nice MX5 for sale:D.

I don't even know where to start with those comments, Steve .....

Wait till I tell Jodie that you want to sell her car! .... I'd start driving now if I were you and wouldn't look in the rear vision mirror in case her reflection was in it breathing fire ...

Then you are trying to palm of my MX5 .... does it ever stop with you?

I'm surprised you didn't suggest selling my 911 so that he could afford a better 944 ..... or were saving that as a surprise for me later on?

My main concerns with that car are firstly, like you, it is the first series (non oval dash) but also that it has been for sale for quite a long time. He did do the right thing though and like I suggested, has asked the members on here if they know anything about it.

So, in conclusion ... stay away from the Cayenne, the 911 and the MX5! .....

(as always mate ...... love ya work!)

Why would that concern you?

My series 1 is a fine car ; 2 of my sons rate this the best amongst my steeds ; only the 16 year old prefers the 911 , then 924 ... then the 944/928

My 944S1 has been utterly reliable at all times of the year , and is quite cheap to run.

Welcome Brandon and good to see see ya on the forum.

Nice colour you are looking at.....

I also agree as far as I personally prefer the 'oval' dash myself but in saying that they pretty well all look good.

As your dad would probably agree have a good look around and dont jump in until you have had a look at a few.

I will pm you a link to a good book to read as well. If you need anything or your dads car gets going we can always organise another drive day.

We may even get Tingy out for a local run. Talk soon.

Sorry Tazzie ..... wrong choice of words.

I'm not so much concerned about the series 1 as a car,  more so that the update series seems more sought after so will be an easier sell one day if he ever decides to move it on.

I'm happy to look at either model, but at the same dollars, would prefer the oval dash (assuming they are both good cars).

Hi Mp,

I don't usually post, don't have much to add to all the info on PFA, but I do lurk every week with a mild interest in the 911 madness and came across your post. Yes I have driven this 944! I looked at it when he first put it up for sale and I couldn't get him to hardly budge on price when I wanted to buy it. Wanted something like $14500 and I thought I might get it for $12 or 13. It's a bit lower now huh! Bad luck for me, my $$$ has been spent elsewhere. I wanted just a nice little toy without too much expense and it seemed like a pretty good car. Paint and body and motor all looked really good to me and it drove well too. Hope this helps you out...

thank you everyone for your thoughts and comments ... the 944 really is such a great car and it would be one I'd be excited to own and drive. the main thing that seems to differ between the choice of car is the dash (pre-1986). I do see where everyone is coming from with the oval dash and why to go for them, but I really quite like the look of the older dash ... it just has so much more of a retro feel and I think it's quite nice.

I guess I'll just keep an eye out for what comes up and definitely ask about some again on the forum. thanks for such a warm welcome everyone!

I agree with your ol skool dash preference, that's one of the reasons I was chasing that older car over a newer 944. Good luck with the chase, I see it is sold now
