itsujack Posted 28December, 2015 Report Share Posted 28December, 2015 So on the last SMT run (chasing Billy to Bathurst), the secondary muffler finally succumbed and I blew a decent hole in the side of it:Apparently this is not uncommon when running a cup pipe (which I've been running since purchase, installed by previous owner). On the plus side this opens up some exhaust options:1. Repair or replace secondary and repeat (with a likely failure again sometime down the track)2. Replace secondary muffler with a g-pipe bypass (cheapest option but likely too loud in conjunction with cup pipe)3. Find a primary muffler and remove the cup pipe and install a g-pipe in place of secondary (need to source both)4. Install a complete new system (Fabspeed?) including high performance cat? Thoughts, and anyone willing to part with either muffler or a g pipe?

itsujack Posted 28December, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 28December, 2015 that's what that noise was.. rattle rattle, was a loose piece of the inner wall of the muffler, it's twin layer there and both blown, wife has been calling it the 964 baking tray since, so thought better take a look, visiting muffler shop tomorrow... Tit Posted 28December, 2015 Report Share Posted 28December, 2015 G pipes are a relatively cheap experiment. I have a long-neck version. Gives a nice muscle car sound

Gives a nice muscle car soundThanks T, I've come to this conclusion too following a bit of research tonight... Will be calling the local distributor in the morning for one of these:Already have the Cargraphic cup pipe, might be a bit loud with both, if so I'll put a stock primary on with the g

Holy hell what a noise! I actually really like it... the neighbours not so much...??

itsujack Posted 30December, 2015 Author Report Share Posted 30December, 2015 This thread is making me paranoid about my cup pipe. I was a little surprised given it's such a popular modification (originally on the Cup cars), unfortunately seems pretty common to blow the secondary. I found several threads on RL, here's just a couple:http://rennlist.com/forums/964-forum/905806-installed-cup-pipe-and.htmlhttp://rennlist.com/forums/964-forum/766698-ever-since-i-bought-my-964-its-had-a-nasty-exhaust-rattle-today-i-found-the-problem.html

Claywong Posted 30December, 2015 Report Share Posted 30December, 2015 So honestly, does the cup bypass alone or g pipe alone sound better?I am running a cup bypass and a secondary and sounds sweet! Wouldn't mind a bit more loudness!
firstone Posted 30December, 2015 Report Share Posted 30December, 2015 I started a 13B rotory once with only headers and an 18"x 3" expansion chamber on it. Phwah. Loved the noise. Neighbour's shocked. It just added to the joy really. ?
JV911 Posted 4January, 2016 Report Share Posted 4January, 2016 4. Install a complete new system (Fabspeed?) including high performance cat? With the sh!t A$ you could get a custom exhaust built locally, cheaper. If I was to do it again I would get something like what's on the blue RSR at Autohaus. If I was to do it again I would get something like what's on the blue RSR at Autohaus.Yes, I think this may be in the C4s future...For now I just received a secondhand secondary from twood, which will go on. Interesting note: I spoke to Weltmeister yesterday (they put the Cargraphic Cup Pipe on originally), about the various options. The do not recommend the G pipe at all, too much drone and apparently the primary is more restrictive than the secondary plus location of the primary makes more sense to remove it from the back of the car. So they always go for the Cup Pipe and expect secondary failures! So I guess you treat the secondary as a disposable item... unless you have it reinforced and a slight convex profile introduced to the side that fails. Apparently the flat face is the weak point. So I'll be having the original reinforced and ready when I need a new one.So honestly, does the cup bypass alone or g pipe alone sound better?I am running a cup bypass and a secondary and sounds sweet! Wouldn't mind a bit more loudness!I think general consensus is cup pipe sounds more Porsche, whilst G Pipe is a little deeper and more V8. But it's all pretty personal taste. Bypass both and you get this: (turn up your speakers! sound starts at 1:12 and goes crazy at 2:25)
