996 - 3.4 v 3.6

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this has been done to death - Apart from cosmetics is the 3.4 996 2000 model for example, really that inferior to the later 3.6's?

Been looking for a Manual /  RWD / 3.6 / Back on Black which are a bit thin on the ground at the moment.  Green / Silver / White / Blue  would also do!

I've seen a few 3.4's that look well sorted but not going to buy for the sake of it or am I missing out here?

Driven a 3.6 and it ticked all the boxes just couldn't agree on price at the time...majority of the 3.4's are interstate so test driving is difficult.

Any purchase would immediately be backed up with an IMS update / freshen regardless of purchase..

Any thoughts appreciated...

Cheers - Jim.

Tidy!

Hi Jim,

When ever Im buying anything such as a car I always have in the back of my mind that one day I may want to sell and try to put as much in my favour as possible.I buy the best that I can afford, look after it and hopefully have a great expeirience. As you know by now the 996 has been the topic of many disscussions many negative so something to consider if there comes a time to move it on. Having said that there are plenty of people that will tell you the 996 is currently the best bang for your buck 911 at the moment and when I started looking 2  1/2 years ago I was in the market for an 4s manual but as time went on they increased in value to the point I had to rethink what I could afford to buy. Hope this helps.

Porsche history teaches us the first of most things they do end up being appreciated one day. The first watercooled will have its day, and rising prices of the tt and gt cars already indicate this isn't far away.

Buying the best you can afford seems like good advice and I have a feeling there is still a bit of depreciation left to go, so more should pop up. Low km well maintained cars of course.

An opinion from "Drive" that you might find interesting: http://www.drive.com.au/used-car-reviews/porsche-911-19982003-used-car-review-20140611-zs1ub.html

Cheers for the input - Some valid points in regard to resale / affordability etc. I've always been interested in Porsche generally but over the last year have been delving deeper into the specifics, bordering on obsessive, prior to making a purchase. There are conflicting stories out there in regard to model variants but I have definitely noticed that there is a shift towards pushing the positive aspects of the variant in regard to drive-ability and affordability. The search continues....

So was it:

Gen 1 for authenticity

Gen 2 more grunt / face lift

Gen 2 (Targa) to make the most of those sunny days

Gen 2 (4S) For the Turbo looks

Turbo.....

I'm not mentioning the others in case my wife is looking.....

Jim.

if you have the budget for a turbo you are probably onto a good thing, although they have climbed significantly in price and are making 997's look like a good option. Certainly they are a lot more refined car

I assume you're looking for a coupe?

What would the budget be?

Probably more 1st gen cars to choose from and great value buying in $40-45k

I feel the gen 2 is worth the extra. Expect $48-$55k

Steer clear of the targa if thinking about resale...they sit on the market a LONG time and can have expensive complications with the roof. If you really want one negotiate hard as the car has likely been on the market forever. I'd be offering under $45k

There has been a few low cost (high kms) 4S recently, they look great, just make sure they check out. $55-65k

Not long ago turbos could be had for $80-100 are now $120+ unless a UK import.

GT3's are $150+! As a road car are they $100k better than a C2.....?

I am looking for a Coupe / Would consider a Targa as well but I've also read some horror stories about cost of fixing them.

There is one on line locally but the asking price is in 997 territory so we wont be going there.

My budget is for a Gen 2 preferably under 100k km. Couple of mates have 996 (4S) / 997 (Turbo) and the general consensus was to avoid the 3.4.

They are using their cars as play things whereas mine would be a daily affair.

End of the day the car is for me so the real positive to a 3.4 is the $$ saving which will mean the modifications could happen quicker.

But I'm really in no rush

Cheers - Jim.

Personally I prefer the look of the MK1 over the MK2 but I also couldn't see the value in the extra $5-10k for the MK2, particularly if you can pick up a later MK1 with PSM and 4 airbags. I haven't read any reasons why to avoid the 3.4 over the 3.6 but I thought they are both supposed to be crap according to the Internet. The IMS in the 3.4 is less likely to go bang but that's irrelevant if you're doing the upgrade. I guess if you can, test driving both is going to be the best way to make a decision.
