MH1 Posted 17January, 2016 Report Posted 17January, 2016 Hi. I had a great running 1970 911t and then 'tinkered' by putting a Pertronix in the Bosch distributor and a Flamethrower coil. Couldn't get it started with this set up and went back to the points, still won't start; cut a very long story short and many swaps between the points and Pertronix, timing and TDC settings it still won't start. Further investigation reveals I have no power to the coil now; I have no blown fuses or any signs of wear. I'm very confused as to how to solve this or where to from here. CD box? Any advice or even anyone in the Seventeen Mile Rocks area of Brisbane that could assist with a few ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers...
Stew F Posted 18January, 2016 Report Posted 18January, 2016 Check that eveything on the distributor that should be insulated is actually insulated. I've used pertronix units in a number of engines and never had a problem, tho I did leave a fibre washer out once. Also check that the coil wires aren't broken.
MH1 Posted 18January, 2016 Author Report Posted 18January, 2016 Thanks Stew. I'm tracing the wiring back to the CDI tonight to see if there are any breaks/wearing in the wiring, I'll check the coil leads also. I'm sure it's an electrical issue, determined to get to the bottom of it and give the Pertronix a go. Cheers
Stew F Posted 18January, 2016 Report Posted 18January, 2016 I reckon they are really good. Had them on a Ford Y Block, Dodge 230ci sidevalve 6, and a Holden grey motor. Each time it was an easy install and a noticeable difference.Does yours have a ballast resistor? If so, check that it hasn't burned through.
Peter M Posted 18January, 2016 Report Posted 18January, 2016 MH,Just check you haven't put the distributor in 180 degrees out. Not saying you would do something I've done many times but....
MH1 Posted 18January, 2016 Author Report Posted 18January, 2016 Checked and double checked (and the rest) position of distributor and TDC. Tonight I took off the lhs upper rocker cover and made sure it was at no 1 on TDC, which it was. Tonight I traced all the wires back to the CDI and re-insulated all the grounds in that area, and it still wouldn't start. My next move is to drain the fuel tank and put fresh fuel in, not that it's old but only has about $10 in and may just be a cheap fix?! Other than that I'm stumped. Thanks for the input, when I figure out what it is I'll try the Pertronix again.
MH1 Posted 21January, 2016 Author Report Posted 21January, 2016 So, this no starter thing has become a bit of a P.I.T.A! I'm out of ideas, could the Bosch CD box be at fault? Anyone out there in the Brisbane area knowledgable and can assist? Does anybody know a call out service for old Porsches? Please!! Cheers...
Peter M Posted 21January, 2016 Report Posted 21January, 2016 MH1,Do you need to run the Bosch CDI with the Pertronix? Was the Bosch CDI standard equipment in 1970?I thought the Ignitor 1 setup just replaced the standard points and condenser?Have you drawn yourself a circuit diagram of your current setup? At the very least it may alert you to something odd otherwise you could post it here for comment/suggestions.CheersPeter
tazzieman Posted 21January, 2016 Report Posted 21January, 2016 Can you open the CD box and check for burnt and bad stuff? And refer to http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/226517-history-bosch-cdi-toubleshooting-info-parts-list-changes-schematics.html
Stew F Posted 22January, 2016 Report Posted 22January, 2016 If it has a CD box check this out on the Pertronix website.http://www.pertronix.com/support/tips/pdf/porsche_cd_diagram.pdfAlso, have you got the right Igniter unit? According to the Pertronix dogalogue 69-71 T's had 2 types of dizzies. A Bosch & a Magnetti Marelli.Do you have any spark at all?
