1983 911 SC (repair or sell)

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

New to the site, so look fwd to getting to know members. I own a 1983 911 sc and mechanically is 100%. Unfortunately it is no longer cosmetically 100% (see attached pics). I was the victim of a P platers tow bar on an old Hyundai Elantra. I am now contemplating the costs of repair as apposed to selling as is. This pains me as I really love the car and have looked after it since I bought it over 7 years ago. Just looking for the opinion of people with experience in the repairs area. As you know to look after a car like this costs money, therefore hate to think of the repair costs associated with damage i.e. front bonnet, left wing and bumper. Anyway let me know your thoughts. And before anybody mentions insurance, no have technicalities with that as I froze insurance when the car was in with mechanic (for over a year as he was experiencing health problems) and this is now out of my own pocket. Raging! IMG_0319.thumb.JPG.563ccc6747414541b44af

damaged_911_sc_jpeg.thumb.jpg.e65588716bSorry trying to figure out how to upload as size is limited. Attached damage by towbar. Ouch, my poor little girl.

As a above. If damage was done while at mechanics, they should have goods in custody or similar cover. That aside min cash repair cost if you can get good second hand panels would be around 5 k ++ though more, if more extensive issues discovered and or you get cursed withwhileyou'reretheresyndrome

  Bummer mate

Personally, if its the love of your life, fix it. You won't get much as a crash job sale unless someone just has to have it.

Buy bits now and then when finances allow, and pull the damaged parts off yourself to save a shop charging you for it. If the floor pan is ok, and its just the front pan (behind the guard where the fuel tank sits) they can be purchased relatively cheap from the US, or James at Autohaus Hamilton in Sydney. With prices the way they are now, it would make financial sense to fix it and keep it.

 My opinion anyway

I'm looking to have it quoted but to have it repaired right, would need to probably go with a full respray plus looking at parts i.e. bonnet, wing and bumper, looking at big $$. Also about to start building a house so don't know if I have the time or energy. I'm sure that other have had to repair similar and just curious what estimate they would put on repair price tag. The wound is still raw so haven't look around for parts yet (bonnet would expect around 2k). As you know Michel our small 911's stand no chance against a tow bar and higher car (you can see where towbar clipped the bumper and due to the shape of the car went under the Hyundai ).

Surely you could hit up the Hyundai driver and/or the mechanic who was responsible for it while in his shop for a cash payout based on quotes to fix it.  Don't let them off the hook.

Then as Lee said, source the parts yourself and do what spanner work you're able to. Save heaps on the repair that way.

I won't be cheap if you get a p-car shop to do it. Fixing up a rear bumper and a rear turbo guard cost my insurance company $12k+. Your damage is a whole lot worse. There are guys on here that would go searching for parts and fix them selves, but to go through a reputable repair shop I don't see you being charged much less than $20k assuming there is no major frame damage.

Hyundi insurance should be paying for this....or is this a case of a teenage daughter mishap?

Tough to sell in the shape it is in though

Jimmy,

If you're tight with money I suggest you forget a full respray as that were it really adds up.  Also running miscoloured or primed mudguard and bonnet for a few years is OK for Magnus, so why not you?:)

Just don't do anything rash, take your time.

I wonder how many offers you've had already!

I wonder how many offers you've had already!

Ha ha! Indeed they are circling over head. And thanks all for your advise. Just bad timing for me and not looking to do anything rash, if I did would have been facing a judge. I need to just focus on what I'm going to do moving fwd and not think about what happened otherwise I'd be a very angry man.

I know about the option of America, but shipping is also a killer (got parts in for my bike which wasn't bad but bulky items, will end up paying). My initial thought was $20k and dare say the missus reminded me that he car wasn't worth $20k. I'm a sucker for a curvy car with personality, and the very few occasions I do drive a car, well I enjoy the wee 911.

I will spend some time now researching parts etc and any other tips on where, would be appreciated ( I know of Pelican in America)

Jimmy contact Swan Porsche, KTEC and the other shops in WA. stick a wanted ad on PFA ,gumtree and the parts you seek will come. Heck I've got some G series stuff I'd bet fryer whose closer to you and others also have a stash of this n that. I still think if you don't have any tub damage and you buy good parts at good money and avoid a full repaint and can disassemble reassemble you'll get it all done for less than 7k. The parts damaged are all bolt on

Contact someone that has done a "long hood conversion"  or someone building a "homebuilt hot rod" or someone that has built a "weekend blaster" or contact Zag Brothers.

…and it's LHD, not Australian delivered.

I think your missus is incorrect with that valuation of $20k

Ill take it for $20K  haha the PFA auction has started

Hey James P, typo on my behalf. When the missus asked me about repair costs after it happened, I snapped back in annoyance "probably around f*ing 20K" which was a rough estimate. Her reply was that HER car wasn't worth more than $20k (Audi A4).

What was it at the mechanics for?  That will have some bearing on whether you want to keep it or not.

As mentioned, have the full service history and the engine is 100%, its just the cosmetics of it now. Also I have been to some of these Porsche garages around Perth and they sure do know how to charge and charge for apprentice mechanics to work on the car. They will give it a wipe with a cloth, leave a lolly on the dash and then ask you to pull your pants down. Everyone has to make money and I expect and accept that, just some are piss takers.

Thanks again for all of the advise and I will now start pricing up and contact some of you guys. Really appreciate your comments.

Cheers Jimmy

Gday Jimmy aside from the odd grammar retort we're mostly harmless and helpful.

Probably Tom now he's had his Metamucil is best placed to assist in appropriate brace technique when been given the bills - pm TurboT

$12k+? Ha! Your insurance company got off lightly, should have seen my bill!
