The 931 who owned owns or ogles

Recommended Posts

dbl post but realised this is the arena to be seen in

Curious it been the 40 year anniversary and I noted a landslide of interest (3) in an earlier post to attend a 924 get together.

But really should the 924 in all its varied guises (admittedly a 924 auto or any auto excepting my Sporto...) be that maligned? Does owning to this desire that dare not be named conclude your complete lack of hirsute  moustachioed machismo. Could Tazzie be Tazzie without, can Sven in platforms stretch his tall frame comfortably?

The 924 certainly comes with pedigree, design stylin and great late 70's colour choices, like MY luscious MOCHA BLACK SC ( currently f/s)

Sure no powerhouse in N/A mode but neither is a SWB 2.0. Did Rod own a 924 two tone with tartan inserts I'm betting.

Who had one as they're first Porsche, who is owning one who is jostling to buy one?

Personally, I like the basic shape of a 924, and was close to buying an auto to donate to help a mate who had lost his leg in an accident. He didn't want a 924, so I didn't buy it. That one, and another manual a couple of years ago that had some slight accident damage going very cheap I was going to clean up and flip it

The couple of reasons I didn't buy the latter was the engine and gearbox were a bit of a lucky dip scenario. The value just wasn't there to warrant rebuilding both of the above. For me anyway. I was offered a nice white 924 late last year for $1500 that I knocked back. I shoulda bought it, but the 912 engine rebuild killed any hope of that

It would need to be pretty bloody good to invest a few grand into a 924, or be an original turbo car to sit on for a while. Though saying that,  I doubt values will go nuts unless Derek Bell has owned it. 944's look much better to me, and a much better package for not a lot of extra money. I'd still love to own one

I suppose it all comes own to whether you like the "drive" or not. They are quite raw (that Audi 2.0 could never be called smooth).

Handling is (gasp!) MX-5 flickable, and the car feels lighter than a 944. In addition, there is rarely enough power to get yourself into too much trouble (either via oversteer, or the police). That's okay with me.

Plus, they are cheap to buy, and cheap(er) to own. Build quality is Porsche, so they can still be found in reasonable condition following a good look. Not an investment though (well, maybe Turbos will get there), and not really a great platform to hotrod (that IMHO would be the 924S).

I love driving mine, it's loud, low and soooo balanced. I don't even bother listening to the stereo!

Note: caveat is that I have never lusted after the rear engined P-cars. I truly appreciate them, but not my style.

Indeed they are raw - not many cars with balance shafts back in '81. Much simpler mechanicals than the 944 and costs virtually nothing to run. No power steering which is a very good thing. My 944 feels loosey goosey by comparison.

Had a hot rod one a few years back. Lowered 7 & 8" 3 piece wheels, bigger throttle body, extractors and some internals done. Was quite quick and stuck like the proverbial in the corners. Used to startle the 944s on track a few times. Have to dig out a photo.
