Pork Chops Posted 27March, 2016 Report Share Posted 27March, 2016 Hi, got a 1978 911 SC that needs a good paint job. I'm not sure it's a full resto but a glass out good quality paint job. The car has 2 colours on top of the original and I'd like to take it back to its original Copper Bronze Metallic. Will consider bare metal depending on the advice I get when talking to folk. So, who in Melbourne is recommended to do a properly good job and not charge Porsche tax.Any other advice from those who've been down this road will gladly be taken. But please, only offer advice if you've been there or know what you're talking about. No pretenders please. Many thanks and Happy Easter to all. Skidmarks Posted 27March, 2016 Report Share Posted 27March, 2016 I've used Skunkwerks for the last 4 cars. Based in Colac but they collect in covered trailer. Brilliant prep and finishing. They work metal and don't bog. Don't charge the earth. Not cheap but not OTT. Pm me for details. I've also got them doing my 356 cab and 911T in the next 6 months. scashin

Mike-S Posted 28March, 2016 Report Share Posted 28March, 2016 Damage Bodyworks, 11 Roper St, Moorabbin, bloke called Bill. 9553 5975.Recommended by Stewart at 9Auto, I've seen 3 911's in there painted either fully or partly by this guy and it's why he's going to be doing the entire front of mine shortly (strip back to bare metal). $2k seemed good when compared to others, helped probably by actually being able to see 911's he'd done. Pork Chops Posted 28March, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 28March, 2016 Any advice on process? Mine is a full paint job, possibly engine out for the bay. I'd definitely want the glass out so does one drop off and the body shop do the lot or do you get a mechanic to strip the shell and then give it to the body shop? Okrasa Kid Posted 28March, 2016 Report Share Posted 28March, 2016 Damage Bodyworks, 11 Roper St, Moorabbin, bloke called Bill. Stewart's a solid guy who I entrust to work on my car.On his recommendation I'll also checkout Damage Bodyworks as I need to get the front of my 993 painted and a small rust pimple removed from the lower windscreen. That said being really fussy I'm wondering about the economics of a full window out respray given the current market values of a 993C2S.Interested to learn more about the process also.Cheers
Mike-S Posted 28March, 2016 Report Share Posted 28March, 2016 I believe Stewart's lined this guy up to do a 993 Turbo as well, it was in his workshop a month ago and that'll be a full windows and engine out job. It's not much of a bodyshop to look at (Stew did warn me of that!) but the quality of the work spoke for itself. He wants mine for at least 2 weeks to do the front, the bodyshop will strip it first then out it back together, but for an engine and windows out job I'd be suggesting a trusted mechanic do the pull down and the bodyshop just paint it, unless it's a workshop that can do the whole lot in one place. Skidmarks Posted 28March, 2016 Report Share Posted 28March, 2016 Please do.Hi Skiddy, system says I can't PM you. Not sure if that's to do with me or you but I'd be keen for relevant details about Skunkworks. Cheers.Apologies. Mailbox was full. Have pm'd you. Any advice on process? Mine is a full paint job, possibly engine out for the bay. I'd definitely want the glass out so does one drop off and the body shop do the lot or do you get a mechanic to strip the shell and then give it to the body shop?I'd get the mechanic to drop the engine/gearbox out and then send it. As for the process, it's glass out, doors off, guards off, all rubbers off and then you talk to the guys doing the work as they will tell you the rest. Any advice on process? Mine is a full paint job, possibly engine out for the bay. I'd definitely want the glass out so does one drop off and the body shop do the lot or do you get a mechanic to strip the shell and then give it to the body shop?in relation to the engine bay, often a really solid clean with some light solvents will do the job just as well. I did that on my 73E and whilst the apprentice who had the job of using a toothbrush and solvents is still getting therapy, the result was nice and authentic and saved pulling out wiring looms etc.
Sharp SC Posted 2April, 2016 Report Share Posted 2April, 2016 I know Ian Willmots in Frankston do heaps of 911's and 356.I have taken mine there for a small sill repair years ago and a BMW that i had side swiped by a Jeep!Does great work
Aircooled Junkie Posted 9April, 2016 Report Share Posted 9April, 2016 Louie at Paint & Custom is your man, his attention to detail, prep & colour match is as good as it gets & I am extremely fussy ! His prices are fair & reasonable. He does a lot of work for Weltmeister, you will always see Porsches in his workshop...David ( Okrasa Kid ) you will need to have glass out for that windscreen corner blemish but no big deal, it usually comes with the territory on a 993. The rear window though bottom corners can be a real pain.though.
poli84 Posted 12April, 2016 Report Share Posted 12April, 2016 Another recommendation for Louie at Paint and Custom. I recently had my 964 there for an insurance job. Very happy with the colour match of the new bumpers to the rest of the car, car was put back together really well. Above all, great to deal with. My recommendation came from KGB. Pork Chops Posted 19April, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 19April, 2016 Went to P&C today and yes it's all good except if you're paying the bill. I got told $55k for a bare metal re-spray of everything. Would no doubt be a mickey mouse job but that's plain cray cray. They must make a lot of money from insurance claims or from people who believe the more you pay the better the job gets, with no upper limit on what you pay. Perhaps they took me for a fool or didn't want the job.So these guys are off the list for me but I've got some other interesting options and will let you know once I've picked a shop. GUT Posted 19April, 2016 Report Share Posted 19April, 2016 Holy $&!#!$55k...ummm what am I missing? Is there anyone who thinks that's even remotely reasonable? What's the hourly rate? $500?
clutch-monkey Posted 19April, 2016 Report Share Posted 19April, 2016 (edited) haha what? are they repairing rust and welding in new panels or something?that said depending on their workshop rates, if they have to spend time to dismantle the car it was always going to be expensivestill, i got quoted 17k to repair, paint and deseam this spitfire, and ended up doing it myself for half that. Panels are OK. No better no worse. $55k for a proper job and you could easily spend more they said...im not their kind of client. clutch-monkey Posted 19April, 2016 Report Share Posted 19April, 2016 yeah i usually strip the car myself to cut costs down so anything over 10 would have been considered exorbitant imo..
hugh Posted 19April, 2016 Report Share Posted 19April, 2016 @Pork Chops I've just picked my GT3 up from Euro Panel in Geelong and can highly recommend them. Highly professional, organised + know their stuff (especially Porsche). It was worth the drive and effort to get down there, you wont be disappointed. The work was done in-conjunction with Michael Bailey (detailer) whom is also Geelong based, someone whom I would also highly recommend. JonoF Posted 10July, 2017 Report Share Posted 10July, 2017 GentsWhere did you net out on good body work / paint shops around Melbourne? I've heard good things about Shunk Werks and put through a call to Rohan today, but he's OS this week. Can any one share ball park figures for a bare metal respray or even just a sand and respray? Any guidance appreciated. CheersJono

Zen_Garage Posted 30September, 2019 Report Share Posted 30September, 2019 Hi everyone, this has been a great thread for me to read as I start the planning stage of converting my backdate 73 to a 72ST outlaw. Since this time, would anyone change their recommendations of who to frequent with regards to obtaining a full glass out et al respray? The backdate is currently silver and I want it to be an entirely different colour (short list is Albert Blue or a metallic green such as the 992 version of aventurine gruen metallic). Any tips would be much appreciated!
