TE911 Posted 31March, 2016 Report Share Posted 31March, 2016 Hi,Im planning on bringing a car to NSW from VIC.The car has historic plates which aren't transferable and i want to drive the car back to NSW.Has anyone been in the same situation? What is the procedure?I vaguely know of a day permit to drive the car home? is this true and how is it done?Cheers. MFX Posted 1April, 2016 Report Share Posted 1April, 2016 My father bought a car from NSW a few years ago and got a permit to drive it home to Adelaide. The procedure then he had to go into NSW RTA and get the permit, and I think it lasted a week or 2, to drive the car back to SA. He had to do it with no number plates on the car though, so he did get stopped a couple of times on the way, but it wasn't an issue.I would suggest the same procedure. Go into Vic Motor reg (whatever it is called down there) and I would assume they have something similar.
ANF Posted 1April, 2016 Report Share Posted 1April, 2016 From memory you need to get an unregistered vehicle permit from the state you are buying the car in and then you can drive this car to your home state without plates on. I have done this for within the same state and from my research when looking to bring a car from the mainland is the same for all states. If you are buying it privately the owner may let you drive it home and send the plates back to them, that is what I did when I bought a car from Vic.Beat me by a few seconds... what he said about applying for it You may also need to nominate route/ start-finish point - generally they do not want you touring around, more drive direct from point to point. Stew F Posted 1April, 2016 Report Share Posted 1April, 2016 Years ago I bought a car from vic and drove it home to Adelaide. Went down and transferred the rego to me and transport sa took the vic plates. We had already filled out the necessary paperwork before I left vic. YellowDieselGolf Posted 2April, 2016 Report Share Posted 2April, 2016 I just did this for my 911. I bought it in QLD and returned to NSW. I bought a permit from the RMS for about $30. They give you a sticker for the windscreen and it's valid in any state. Very easy.
XLR8 Posted 8April, 2016 Report Share Posted 8April, 2016 I am under the impression that you are able to drive cars on the prior owners historic rego, as long as you fill in the trip log as the driver. In NSW at least.Collect the car, drive to destination, and either 1) send the plates back, or 2) surrender the plates when you re-register.Please correct me if I am wrong! I just got the Vic Roads unregistered vehicle permit online anyway.

Fraz Posted 11April, 2016 Report Share Posted 11April, 2016 What modifications have been done, I wouldn't think unless it's highly modified an engineers report is required.
