symsy Posted 11April, 2016 Report Share Posted 11April, 2016 I have started going around the TT looking at a few little cosmetic things.. All of these cars and coffee events and more has kicked me into give it a little more love.I have looked at parts catalogue etc and womdered firstly as I have at some point (probably that old wedding ring that I no longer wear) scratched the metal cap of the gear lever and wanted to replace it, if any of you have you stripped yours and is the journey like prizing open a little puzzle , cant tell you how many bits i have broken just doing a simple repair on the landrover Further more I was quoted 600+ bucks today for a complete gearshift unit , which in all honesty would be overkill.I also have a very small crack in the door handle gasket .. big agenda to strip down would you bother or better left to a dealer?Lastly what products have using to give your leather seats some love and or to a get small scuff mark of the back of the high back plastic sports seatsAny experience or advice appreciated..As you have probably seen Im happy to hack the Escort and other metals objects about but rarely have take a tools near the TT but in this instnce cant be arsed to take the car 100kms to the dealer for such trivial things.. Russ Posted 11April, 2016 Report Share Posted 11April, 2016 no knob gags? I'm disappointed.I've been recommended this stuff by a couple of detailing friends, but don't have any leather https://www.carcareproducts.com.au/product/einszett_1z/leather_care (a certain forum member can tell us what it smells like after a misadventure at a tech day in Brisbane though)

symsy Posted 12April, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 12April, 2016 Does this mean no one actually takes 993's apart or is tht its a sin for an owner to go near a TT with a screwdriver other than to open a can of Polish...The dealer is a 100kms away and they always want my car for two days plus and I have to grovel to the Mrs to drive me up and back..come on give a man a break
StevepGT3 Posted 12April, 2016 Report Share Posted 12April, 2016 To remove knob, you have to unspring the boot, it's held in with a wire slightly larger than the hole, then pull it up like removing a jumper and unscrew the Allen key, the whole thing will then slip off Door handle gasket, remove door card, top trim first, lock mechanism is just a wire that needs to be lifted out of slot, and then all bits can be removed from the back
StevepGT3 Posted 12April, 2016 Report Share Posted 12April, 2016 this is the gearshift sans knobif you want I can take a photo of the back of a door card, but it`s pretty self explanatory once removed
symsy Posted 12April, 2016 Author Report Share Posted 12April, 2016 Ah Ha so that explains the whole one peice gear knob replacement at 600+ bucks.. and the 4-6 hours of labour to do it from the dealer , maybe those scratches might just stay Couldnt quite why replacng a 50 cent sized peice of metal would be such a hard job .. but know I undertand ..porsche engineered it to all be one peice , boot shifter and pretty little silver gate cap I probably sound like a complete muppet , but I can find this part on a UK site but could tell if it was aftermarket but the local dealer says complete gershift only and then take out all the trim to fit . http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod127395/Gear-Knob-Insert-Alloy-Engraved-for-Porsche-968---993/Still might be a home job.. they must have attached their original shift top somehow , looks like a disc of round metal stuck to the ball and sitting on a leather boot , doesnt look like that different to the original

I had an RS shifter so not sure, but I would say that the metal bit would probably screw in from the back.If no replacement avail just remove and paint or powder coat it.
