I did make some enquires about this white 944 S2, it was from WA, two guys purchased it to do a charity drive in, there is a write up about it in one of the NSWPC mags.

They drove it from WA to Newcastle, next day it would not start, it found its way to Autoworks, after some amount of $ is was back running. If you have a close look at the photos you can see the panel gapes are all over the place, as it has been in a front ender & not repaired correctly. I was looking to purchace this car but after inspection walked away.

Thanks Port - saved me a call and possibly a trip. The search continues...

Hmm, me too. I usually work about 2min walk from CTS but couldn't get there until tomorrow - called them on Friday for more info. Apparently was in all-original condition, no indication of any top-end work or replacement items, such as clutch or belts. Seemed to me like a steep asking price ($36k) for a car with potentially a bit needing to be done. But it was red.  I might wander in tomorrow and see if I can find out more about the sale price.

Soo..

I am going to out myself as the buyer of the CTS 944 S2. I wont say exactly what I paid but it was wasn't the asking price, a bit less.

Strangely enough I wasn't really in the market just yet for a car and was more intending to look for a BMW of the M3 variety, but being a long time watcher of CTS when the Red 944 S2 came up I thought it was initially a bit steep, but a quick check in of some details, doing some research over night and I jumped at it. truth be told I probably overpaid but I know these don't come up very often.

The initial offer was accepted subject to a few Conditions, one being a satisfactory inspection from a Porsche Specialist. I found someone suitable with a solid reputation for being blunt and direct about things and we tee'd it all up. It came back with a very clean bill of health, just a list of 10 items needing some attention and nothing urgent, all cosmetic in nature.

I was finally able to pop in last weekend and do an in person viewing of the car... i'm very happy with the car, even more happy than i'd imagined. I was very nervous in the lead up wondering if I had gone completely mad and made a mistake.

Anyway i'm thrilled to say its so far exceeded my expectations and the interior needs to be seen to be believed, its just absolutely showroom condition in there and the rest of the car is a thing of beauty, that 944 rear end is simply iconic!! I really can't understand how there's not a bigger following of these cars.

I expect her to arrive sometime next week.

Congrats - I did take a look last week, and for all my previous comments, it does look good! I'd be very tempted to drive it back to Melbourne, and probably go the long way. In any case, look forward to hearing more about it.

Thanks mate

I do hope you find one for yourself soon :)

Ta - just out of interest, if that was your budget, and you're Melbourne, did you look at the black 944T that seems to be hanging around? Just wondered how the two might compare with similar asking prices.

No, not game. I'll have her delivered to my door and will soon be putting her on a club rego

Congratulations 90, you'll love it they are great cars. If you can drive it back though, life is too short, take the day off and just do it :) I drove mine home from Melbourne to Canberra and it was excellent, one of the best days driving I've ever had. You'll get to bond with it and there will be no one to bother you, just you and the S2 and the stereo. The seats are really comfortable I got out at my place feeling refreshed, just sit back enjoy the ride and watch the approving looks and shy smiles from young Mum's in the passenger seat of their family SUV, Porsches do that to people..... Enjoy it, after the first drive you won't remember or care what you paid for it, irrelevant.

I didn't actually, I had noticed when looking at similar examples but I thought the Km a bit too high for me. Although I hear the engines can run extremely long in these cars with proper maintenance, so perhaps not an issue.

According to Wikipedia there were only 128 examples of the S2 delivered to Australia between 89 and 91. But that's just the Coupes.

The global total was 14,071 so it might pay to also look at what's in the UK, coincidentally the currency conversion may also be favourable - something I actually hadn't considered in my own research.

Yep, have scouted the UK ads,and there are loads - current exchange rates put a decent one at around $15-18k plus shipping/landing/tax/rightarm/tax and so on. Problem is getting one here, as if I remember rightly, the car has to be a pre-89 to be brought in as a personal import. S2s are all 89-92. Or have I missed something...???

Is it the usual Porsche form where some of the early 89 cars were actually built in 88? As far as I understand it, the car just needs to be built prior to 1989?

My 928 is an 83 model but built late 82.....

https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/import_options/pre1989scheme.aspx

The date of manufacture is the date the vehicle was first driven or moved from the manufacturer's production line or production facility, after the vehicle's body shell and powertrain assemblies were joined. This is equivalent to the concept of the build date (as developed and used by Australia's automotive industry). To qualify for this option the date of manufacture must be before 1 January 1989.

Thanks. That fits with what I remember. Everything I've read about the S2 says production started Jan 89. A 944T would be nice, but in the UK they started climbing a couple of years ago, and nice ones seem to be the equivalent of $35k+ now.

This appears cheap for a 944 with Boost or is it just me? I get its high k's but recent rebuild (not replacement) to me means matching numbers still, and assume some documents to prove

Have just been looking at that same ad - came back to this thread to post it! Yes, looks cheap, but I guess its the 380,000kms that'll put some off. I'd be interested, and if as good as the ad makes it sound, would probably buy that, but its in Adelaide, and I'm a little hamstrung by distance and stuff happening here. Trying to come up with a plan at 2215hrs with three kids to look after single-handed for a few days...

Looks like it's worth a serious look.  Given an engine rebuild 105K km ago, if done by a reputable shop, the 380,000km doesn't look too bad.  These cars are extremely durable if given the attention they deserve and the pics look like it's been loved.  Also looks like the tops of Koni adjustables under the bonnet and nice white radiator tank confirm this.  It'll be gone quickly, in my opinion.

The ad says he's put $60k into it, even with those Kms as long as most of that is mechanical it could be a real buy at the price he is asking. As long as it isn't a rebuilt write off or dodgy import or something sinister like that it would be well worth a look.
