Shoulda coulda woulda

Recommended Posts

Have you looked back at a Porsche you could have bought and thought 'dammit! I should have bought that, it was so cheap or special or rare...'

What are your best shoulda, coulda, woulda moments?

What's your favourite or best 'one that got away'?

You are stirring up a lot of emotion in this one ..... my wife still makes fun of me that i let it go. Seemed the right thing to do "at the time" ....

1985 Carrera 3.2 matching numbers Aussie delivered ..... M491 option  ...... $20,000

Had been looking on and off for 2 years ... I was the first caller and told the guy I would take it and would fly up that afternoon. He told me to read the PPI first and there was evidence of previous accident damage with possible (likely) chassis damage as well.

Not knowing anything about Porsches at that time, it scared me off .......

Hindsight is a wonderful thing ......

THIS DUMBASS DECISION SHALL NEVER BE SPOKEN OF AGAIN! .....

The (relative) raft of 964's on the market a couple of years ago. $40-50k. Looked at them and thought "why are these unliked". Started saving, missed the boat, bought a Cayman S, still smiling.

I was offered a complete 356 that was pulled apart and ready for restoration. Everything labeled, and sorted so at the point of starting. All for the princely sum of $5000. It was a big project and I was a little scared, and a classic car restorer offered to do it over time as I could afford. I would have had a completely restored, matching numbers 356 by now :(

haha.. where do I start.

black aus delivered SC about 10 mins from me with tartan trim. $22k.. I fecked around and missed out.

blue sc (i think) with 964 motor and lovely paint.. I think it was backdated.. asking $60 ish and was on market for ages

aus delivered 911 turbo 70's vintage I think.. could have bought for $110 through a friend. Mint green it was... I think it went to Autohaus

I have to stop now. Because all I am doing is telling everyone how dumb I am!

Plenty of opportunities to purchase early 901 cars several years ago for petty sums of money compared to today's asking prices. Unfortunately just wasn't in the position financially to take one on.............would have been great to just have grabbed one (sub 40k!) and stuck it away for a 'long term' project car.

I'll just have to wait for the bubble to burst! :D

No regrets .. well thats not true …...should have bought more .. the ones that were too small I threw back for the next fisherman

Ah on second thoughts ..not running my first wife over with the   3.2 Porsche when the DB6 was sold for 55K late 90's in a divorce

Ah on even greater introspection , not running the second wife over in the TT, as she stole the company payroll or pulling a brake hose on her boxster so she could have navgated into the harbour enroute home to the waterfront home. ..

Would a had a GT2 , GT3 and a 356 probably by now

Shoulda never committed myself to be a gentle soul and been commited to my inner hoonigan

Did some window shopping on the 944 "silver rose" that was for sale in Perth less than 12 months ago. Asking price was 50k plus but in hindsight, it was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity that went begging...

When I decided to buy a Porsche in 2004, I knew that i would likely bring it over to Oz in a few years. I had promised my wife would stop "wasting" money on cars, because of the amount of devaluation she had seen on the cars i had owned. So I wanted something reasonably rare. It came down to a choice between a 3.2 ClubSport and the 964RS, so some would say i got lucky and bought the right car. However, there was "one that got away". At the time, a friend had 2 993 GT2's and he offered me one for the equivalent of $200,000. The RS cost $70,000. It was one of the 7(?) RHD cars and was unusual because a special order with factory half cage, all the clubsport features but with carpet. A truly psecial, one off and although it is without any doubt the greatest road car i have ever driven, I didn't buy it because 1. It was more than I wanted to spend (although at the time I could afford it!) and 2. They had gone up a fair bit in value recently so maybe I was buying at the top of the market. My guess is that car is now worth something over $2m, although there was just as good a chance I would have killed myself in that car before it became worth the really big bucks.

The consolation was getting the RS, which was also a privilege to own.

side issue - is the silver rose  special or really just another marketing X pak special?

This hurts...looked at a white 996GT3RS in Jan 15--the car was at CTS. One owner 27k on the clock and had only seen a track while sitting in the car park. Asking price--the owner would have let it go for between $190k and $200k. I still cry about that missed opportunity--stupidly I thought it was too much for a 996. What an idiot I am.

1972 T Coupe (the one with the oil door) $22k passed it over because of a slight dent in the bonnet.

C3 Targa $27k passed it over because it was a Targa.

356 super 90 $50k, same as Mike, Fecked about and missed it.

And probably Mikes red Targa,

Will we be having this conversation about BOXSTERS (& Caymans) in the future??

My guess is yes, but I'm biased. Caymans in particular have never been big sellers planetwide, let alone Australia. The journo's have always rated them, but that has not translated into sales. With the 4-banger 718 polarising so many people's opinions, a flat 6 equipped mid-engine Porsche, with hydraulic steering will almost certainly be occupying forum topics as we dribble onto our keyboards (age-related dribble, of course)

Essentially it was a production run of 1000 (750 USA and 250 RoW) 944 Turbo S cars built in 1988. All cars had the same silver rose (silver/pink) colour, burgundy studio check cloth interior and M758 option code (which was a list of other options packaged together).

We have a winner! Thats gotta burn

3.5 years ago, I was offered a mint SC for $22k. A week later he offered it to me for $19k then $18k a day later. I ended up buying the 912, so I didnt do too badly, yet that SC will haunt me

A black 944 for $3000 was also a car I should have bought. Still, I couldn't be happier with what I've got now

Not knowing too much about the car, but if its a collector grade car. Yes

I have really noticed an increase in interest for front engine Porsches lately, I think we're just getting started.

I have plenty. I tried to follow the market for about 2-3 years but didn't buy my first "classic" Porsche until about a month ago and then i bought 2 for prices at way above the prices I and seen previously. Overpaid dearly on one but I am ok with other. At the end of the day overpaying is relative - if you like what you end up with that's ok i guess.

I recall almost buying a red 930 Turbo in Perth about 2 years ago at $90K was it? A silver 993 Turbo at $110k about the same time or a little later. I met Rob Raymer who offered me plenty offer the last few years and said no to all of them! argh.....anyway thats life.
