1979 911 Targa

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing a 1979 911 Targa. I just wanted to get your feedback as to what I should look out for and what the vin number and engine numbers should read. I had a look online and there's not a lot of info for aus delivered cars

Any special options I should look out for and what's everyone's thoughts on targa's? I know recently the coupes are all the rage

Thanks in advance for your feedback

Ned

You need to check whether It is Aus delivered or not.  Rust is a major issue and you need to find out whether the engine/gearbox are in good condition.

the vin decoders available online will show whether it is a ROW car and if the year lines up.

For the SC the major mechanical issues are broken head studs and gearbox needing rebuild.  These can usually be only checked with a thorough inspection.  You can't usually pick a head stud break from the outside and fixing one usually involves at least a top end rebuild.

If you are not familiar with 911s paying a shop for a pre purchase inspection is a good investment.

Hi Ned,  there are plenty of VIN decoder websites such as this one: https://www.stuttcars.com/technical/vin-decoder/

According to that decoder a 1979 SCTarga VIN should read:  911931xxxx  eg 9119310001-9119311874  according to http://www.adelgigs.com/911scproductiondata.shtml

The 1979 SC VIN doesn't appear to distinguish between country. eg some VINs have a different number for US delivered vs ROW cars such as Australia.  You would need to look at the books, run the VIN past Porsche Australia or check the POA if available to confirm Australian delivered.

The engine number should read 6390001 +  according to http://www.adelgigs.com/911scproductiondata.shtml

As you're aware, Targa's and Cabs are not as popular as coupe's and are therefore priced accordingly.  Personally I love Targa's.

No special options on an SC that I am aware of it just comes down to taste.  here's a comprehensive list of option codes: http://www.adelgigs.com/911options.shtml

and a PPI form a reputable Porsche specialist independent of where the car is usually serviced is recommended....

Thanks for the info that is really helpful. I will most certainly use your info when I am inspecting the car this weekend.

What's the general price guide these days for an Aussie 911 targa in today's market?

a few benchmarks on the market but it all comes down to originality (matching numbers/factory colour/wheels/steering wheel etc), paint condition, interior condition and maintenance history.  A set of nice Fuchs for example will set you back thousands $$$ if not on the car already. Australian delivered seem to ask a premium of 20-30% or so. Similarly, Targa's are generally at a reduction to coupes of 20-30% or so as well.

Thanks for the info guys. The only problem is I don't have a lot of info on the car other than that it is a 79 Aussie car. It is quite a distance away so I'm just trying to gather as much info as I can so I can do the right checks when I actually physically inspect the car

One of the key things in assessing a car from a distance is the service log book. I would be asking for a scan of the front page with the numbers and delivery details, so you can contact PCA to verify. In addition, I would like to see all the stamps in the book to show it has been serviced. It will give you an idea about how the car has been looked after. And after you have seen it, get an independent PPI. I am sure when you are happy to progress to that stage, somebody on here will be able to recommend a suitable place near to where the car is.

Update: So I viewed the car this arvo, chassis no was along the lines of 91A0131... Engine no 639...

Car presents well overall, not concourse.

Obvious question is the chassis number is not of the same sequence as those posted by Diamond911.

Any input would be great

Did you happen to get the engine type number? This car you're looking at appears to be a 1980 model year, with a 1979 engine.

Hope this info helps you NA944.

I didn't get the full engine number but it was definately 639 first 3 digits.

Does the 79 engine have a 5 blade fan? This one had more than 5...

Seemed a bit funny to me when I check the numbers

Helps a lot thanks mate!
