Stew F Posted 23August, 2016 Report Share Posted 23August, 2016 Not sure if we've had this before. Did a search and didn't see anything. What was your first set of wheels? For me it was a white 1970 VG valiant pacer 4 door in near mint condition. It had a 245 and 3 speed, wide chromies, and one of those GT Falcon rear spoilers. I paid $700 for it. It went like a scalded cat. Would love to have it now. DJM Posted 23August, 2016 Report Share Posted 23August, 2016 Datsun 1600 with a stonking 1.8L Weber side draft, 5 speed and Stanza SSS interior. Barrel rolled it pretending to be Ari Vatanen at 18 years and 6 days old. Got my licence on my 18th birthday so you can figure out how long it lasted. reshelled it in the garage at home using a $500 donor.
Tips Posted 23August, 2016 Report Share Posted 23August, 2016 Mazda 1500 multi colour panels (called patch) cost me $500 in 1978, certainly a big step up from my Raliegh no geared bike, it's probably what came after that was more interesting. LeeM Posted 23August, 2016 Report Share Posted 23August, 2016 MK2 Cortina for $275On my test drive, I thought I'd do a skid, and there was so much smoke, I thought I was a god at burnouts. Ofcourse I had to buy it. Got it home, fired it up, and the plume of smoke had my dad just shake his head knowing he'd have to rebuild the engine. It turned into a great car after that, and I still love MK 1 and 2 Cortina's

Rob Posted 23August, 2016 Report Share Posted 23August, 2016 1963 Morris Mini Cooper 997cc, I was about the 10th owner. It had been black, metallic blue and red by the time I bought it, and white with a black roof when I sold it. Of course I put "S" badges and 5" widies on it. Taught me how to rebuild motors and electrics and to find out more about cars before I dived in and bought them...

Mike-S Posted 23August, 2016 Report Share Posted 23August, 2016 1978 Talbot Sunbeam 1600ti. Paid £130 for it at the auctions, was a one lady owner car with only 47k on it, doors and wings made of rust (replaced with fibreglass versions from Skip Brown Motorsport) and the headlining was brown with nicotine staining, I think the one lady owner just sat in it and smoked ! Dad gave me the choice of the Sunbeam or a Mk2 Escort, same as all my mates had but all the Mk2's were 1300's, so I went for the bigger engined and cheaper Sunbeam...Eventually I cracked one of the chassis legs while pretending to be Jimmy McRae and launching it over a humpback bridge, Dad went mad when he found me in the pit underneath it welding it back together ? Pauly Posted 23August, 2016 Report Share Posted 23August, 2016 I thought the most sensible choice for a first car was my 944 turbo. Turned out to be the least sensible choice as the first day I got pulled over, was the same day i got my licence. On a good note at least he said happy birthday! With in a few years of owning it, I turned it from 220hp to around 400hp. Engine has been rebuilt (nothing to crazy, all internals we left stock)Except i fitted the largest turbo that would fit, A race prepped head with larger valves, ect the works. And a cam to match. + other things that help. Over 6 years later, I still have it and still my only car, She runs solid (except a minor hick up with the torque tube) I haven't actually thought about a new car, Priorities have been with my business the last 3 years, but one day there will be a 2nd P car. MackTheKnife Posted 24August, 2016 Report Share Posted 24August, 2016 1972 HQ Kingswood Wagon purchased for $360 in 1993. The bottom of the tailgate was iron ore held together by paint and it had the noisiest suspension ever featured on a production car. It also had a 202 red motor pushing horsepowers onto the road via a column shift trimatic gearbox. It was nicknamed the hearse by my friends since I permanently had the back seat folded down and my waveski lived in the back.Despite the car that it felt like a catamaran on corners, it was a very nice thing to drive. I wouldn't mind another one sometime.

Never got to drive it with the PO's triple Webers, which was probably a good thing as I was penniless student!
