The Ultimate Music Thread

Recommended Posts

After the successful hijack of the Posrche Club thread, I thought it was about time we had a music thread. So what are you listening to, what have you discovered new, or what rave from teh grave have you started to listen to that we need to be reminded of. I hope this doesn't simply become a dump of "all the music I like" but that it can be used to give people a real oportunity to hear something they might not otherwise come across.

In that spirit, and following on from a comment by MacTheKnife following my mention of Iggy Pop, my first recommendation is

Post Pop Depression by Iggy Pop

Most will know that Iggy has been around since the dark ages. Best known for his band "The Stooges" and his long time collaboration and friendship with David Bowie, this is his first solo album for 4 years (The Stooges released Ready to Die in 2013). The album was produced by Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age.

Has to be some Rammstein! German music in German cars :)

Will have to look into them. With such accolades as

Rammstein's style has tended to divide critics. New Zealand's Southland Times (17 December 1999) suggested that Till Lindemann's "booming, sub-sonic voice" would send "the peasants fleeing into their barns and bolting their doors", while the New York Times (9 January 2005) commented that on the stage, "Mr. Lindemann gave off an air of such brute masculinity and barely contained violence that it seemed that he could have reached into the crowd, snatched up a fan, and bitten off his head."

it could be good music to road rage to

Staying on the Josh Homme theme, give the Eagles of Death Metal a try. Don't be fooled by the name, it's a rock band, with an undefinable sub genre. Lets call it "Happy Rock". Homme and Jesse Hughes founded it in the late 1990's. Saw them earlier this year in Sydney. Top gig.

Latest (and fourth) album is called Zipper Down

I like all sorts of music, from the 3 Tenors through to Tool (very dark lyrics and very intense, yet musically brilliant), Tea Party (Jeff Martin is one intense individual and a helluva guitar player!) Slipknot and Rammstein....to a point. Though anything electronic, or that remotely resembles hip hop/rap, and so called 'R n B' (still annoys me immensley that these wannabe musicians actually call it Rhythm and blues!) will never be on my playlist. I hate it

Big grunge fan from back in the day. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone temple pilots etc, and still listen to their cd's often, and very loud.

After Bowie's passing, I listened to a load of songs I hadn't heard for years, and have a new admiration for his stuff (Actually listening to Heroes as I type this) His last album is pretty trippy, yet it is without doubt, Bowie

S'pose I just grew up with classic rock music that is still my favourite style. Being a guitarist in an acoustic duo, we always crank it up playing most of the above, and some Led Zep etc which the punters want to hear, so we oblige, and I usually break strings!

Like Sound Garden and Pearl Jam too Lee :) a few others along same lines too.

Queensryche was a fav, not sure what is going on with them now (have not looked lately into the on-going court case of who actually is Queensryche....)

30 Seconds to Mars is big on my list, Audioslave, Filter, Birds of Tokyo fit in there from time to time. Have always been a big fan of Def Leppard :)

I can listen to a lot (even a Pink cd that my wife put in my car!!) but like Lee don't like the electronic stuff.

I listen to most things.  I'm really into a band called Vanden Plas from Germany. They're a progressive metal band.  I also like 50's, 60's & 70's stuff, surf reverb, Garage & Tiki Rock, you name it.  Zombie Ghost Train aren't bad if you're into phsycobily. My favourite piece of music is Vivaldi's Four seasons.

Silent Lucidity is one if my favourite songs. A punter at a gig said he'd sing it at our next gig he attended if I learnt it on guitar. I did so on a 12 string (amazing sound on a 12), and put him on the spot. He nailed it!

Its the singer who has created all the crap with that band. Strange cat that one

Audioslave is a fave also, yet anything with Chris Cornell I'll listen to. If you ever get a chance,  go see him on his solo acoustic tour. Best gig I've ever seen

Up there as a fav too!! It won song of the year in the US when I happened to be there in 1991, and got me hooked on the band.

Yes a good singer but loony!! All seems to be settled now, with Tate gone from the band. Will be interesting to see how they sound now..... New album out last year, will have to get it :)

We share some similar tastes.... :)

And back to the music. Today, i give you something a little milder and more accessible for many. Some of you might remember a very influencial 1990's British band, The Verve (Urban Hymns, Bitter Sweet Symphony). Their lead singer and main song writer was Richard Ashcroft and a couple of months ago he released a new solo album, These People. While I know that some Aussies haven't forgiven him for what happened at Splendour some years ago, I would still recommend the album as a return to his Verve best.

For me, the music event of the month, maybe even year, is that finally, after lots of rumours, Zack de la Rocha (front man of Rage Against the Machine) as dropped a single in his own right. An album will follow next year
