Itchy feet - what would you buy?

GUT

Recommended Posts

With 3 IB cars, I find myself spending way too much time every week trawling through carsales, gumtree, forums, eBay etc etc looking for something that would be a fitting replacement for one of my babies.

So, what would you swap out of a lovely little Aussie delivered '86 Carrera wide-body (not original but all metal) with MAF kit, chip, SSI's (and all original bits) with books and receipts for?

I need help!

Here's a list of potential candidates - though some need to be crossed off as I don't want to be forking out too much in addition to sales proceeds.

  • '68-'69 Dodge Charger
  • DeTomaso Pantera
  • 996TT
  • 996 GT3
  • BMW M3 - basically any model but I like the E30
  • SLK55
  • SL55
  • AM Vanquish
  • Bolwell Nagari
  • Esky
  • RX3
  • Viper
  • Mustang Fastback
  • Exige
  • Ultima
  • the list goes on

I have a preference for things that might be a bit OTT.

Opinions? Suggestions?

Here's the sacrificial lamb:

Probably a Cosworth of some description, either a 3 door or Escort.

You could probably pick up a very nice Mk1 Escort with a decent engine and have quite some change left over, I'd even consider bringing one over from the UK.

I'm too lazy to search internationally and import.

996gt3, but if you have developed boost addiction then it might have to be the 996tt.

Personally I could do with an e30 M3.

I think I have enough boost. I think I'll miss NA - even though the Carrera's the least powerful of mine, it's really just as much fun. Goes plenty hard enough.

GT3 - yes - just a matter of $

Your list looks like my saved search list on car sales, the old muscle cars are cool but the handling (or lack their of) will just bore you in a very short period of time. Sole reason I sold my Monaro was it was cool, but a pain to drive after the 964.

I have an itch for change myself, a GT3 would be my choice.

Non Porsche I would go a GT40 replica for an OTT car.  They ask Big money for a plastic car.

This has been for sale forever, only thing to watch is getting one registered here in Vic, sometimes the engineering does not trasfer from state to state. Personally I would only buy one that's already registered in Vic.

GT40 rep, Painfull as a road car and very high maintenance as a track car, plus you have to dry sump it if you want to corner quickly

  • '68-'69 Dodge Charger yes yes yes!
  • DeTomaso Pantera kind of a weird one- not as wide appeal when it comes to selling, build quality variable, but would look great/period correct with the 911's
  • 996TT no, not another porsche
  • 996 GT3 no, not another porsche
  • BMW M3 - basically any model but I like the E30 E30 prices currently over inflated, maybe find the cleanest E36 3.2 you can and spend the rest on a holiday lol.
  • SLK55 no
  • SL55 no
  • AM Vanquish no, everyone needs a V12 at some point, just not in a decade old british made car.
  • Bolwell Nagari yes, if the price is right, good bit of australian history. a little 'kit car' in build for me but again very period correct.
  • Esky yes yes yes!
  • RX3 too expensive for what they are, perhaps an SA22 rx7 represents better value and about as much fun?
  • Viper similar to a boat in that it's best you have a good mate who owns one, rather than own one yourself
  • Mustang Fastback yes! safe choice, but classic
  • Exige hands down one of the most fun cars i've had on a track, good value now, bit rough for some roads.
  • Ultima absolute weapon
  • the list goes on

other options.. bmw 2002, still affordable (for now), lots of potential to hot rod.

E24 6 series, as above.

a high end GT40/AC cobra rep?

alfa romeo 105.

lancia fulvia.

early two door wrx.

nissan DR30 skyline.

TA22 celica

original mini

etc

Sell the lamb

Pump the funds into the hot rod:

  1. make it scary fast
  2. use those turbo brakes to make it stop
  3. any other suspension bits you need
  4. that way you have your track weapon and your weekend blaster (930)

Then, purchase Spiller's GT3

996.2 GT3 or Non-Porsche, retro tech VK Group A followed by pro-street LJ Torana.

My brothers and I have looked at a number of Panteras over the years but all would have required a big investment of time and money to get right.

I have a preference for things that might be a bit OTT.

Lambo Jalpa?

You have opened the door with the SL55 and SLK55 so I opt for an AMG, SLK may be a bit soft and you may be better in a Boxster S? SL55 a nice choice or even a SL63 or SL65 (1000 Nm!! )? I would strongly consider a CLK 55 or 63  if I had no 928. A SL65 Black Series would be the ultimate, but doubt your 911 sale would cover the $$$$ or that you can get in Aus....

And that opens the door to a 928.... :P

Or how about the mental CLK 63 Black Series!! :)

Agree on the '68-'69 Dodge Charger, or any other mad 'Murican muscle car.

Huge V8 60's or 70's station wagon.

Early Range Rover 2 door

Jensen Interceptor (budget a pro rewire - everything else is bulletproof Chrylser)

BMW Baur TC 323i  (these will be soft window targa nerd cool/desirable one day)

The Jensen is the standout.  Check out the bare metal supercharged one on speedhunters

Ps. Interceptor

This is why I love you guys!

Yes, the Pantera may be a bit hard to live with - but look at the thing!!! Similarly the GT40 - and yes, lots of cash for a kit car.

Not much love for the Mercs eh? Black series though...

CLK63 Black @$145k in Melbourne on carsales... What's the going rate for these?

Jensen Interceptor - hard to find one that doesn't look like its rotting.

VK Group A - got a ride in a supercharged one around Calder as a kid - always had a sweet spot for them. I did my driving test in a VK V8.

another Porsche...GT3 - I feel it calling.

But then, where's the other 2 cylinders??

Jalpa - followed one on an autobahn in the 90's. Yes.

ok  - back to work...

keep the ideas coming!
