New Toys - P Car Alternatives

Ozvino

Recommended Posts

Despite a firm belief that Porsche make/have made the worlds best cars Im struggling to see value in many P Cars these days especially the Air Cooled stuff

Starting to think of some classic alternatives; MK2 Jag, maybe a Karmen G.....

Seems to still be value around outside of the P Car ranks http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/launceston/cars-vans-utes/1962-jaguar-mk-ii-sedan/1117162145

True, there are many, but I think it would need to have a bit more sporting prowess than the Jag. I had 60's Mercs before my 928 (now Tazzies :) ) and they do not offer anywhere near the same level of involvement or feel.

Maybe an Alfa, BMW or many others, Merc coupe even.... non quite up to an A/C 911. Or you could even try a 924, seems everyone else is :P

This is a bit later but....... http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Alpine-Renault-GTA-1987/SSE-AD-467970/?Cr=0

i have a couple of BMW 2002's, an E9, 240z, triumph spitfire, 240z, mini, etc etc if you have questions about them.

certainly plenty of other makes to try for less money than air cooled stuff, i will be looking at alfa 105 coupes, FD RX-7's, escorts, that sort of thing in the near future.

something like a caterham is also on my list. would love a renault alpine A110 if i could find one. Same goes for a clean R32 GTR, haven't seen one in years.

I'm still keen for an FC3S, clean ones are too damn hard to find though

^^ FD's are too common amongst a certain stereotype here in Sydney. ?

Would love a DR30 with the FJ20DET too! You should check those out Dave, last time I checked with Iron Chef imports they were mid teens to import... Not bad for a cult classic IMO

i guess im a sucker for 80's box!

Whilst air cooled is still unobtainably top of the want list I'm a sucker for V8 Grand tourers

when cash becomes available early next year it's going to either be an SEC560 or 928 that's available at the time for the right $  both seem to be moving up in price now.

Only beemers I am partial to are 2002tii or 635M pack,  the former just getting very scarce haven't seen one for sale for ages

I think i just love coupes ?

Really must get round to building up the Mk2 Escort I part own with a mate. Currently it's just a rolling shell in need of new front panel and guards, eventually it'll house a warmed up 2 litre but we're probably a couple of years from that.

Already have a Spitfire in the garage, could be very tempted by an RS2000 though if a decent one came up for reasonable money and I have a mate back in the UK who's asked me to find a event 4 door RS for him, so I can always get one of those then move it on to him later. Missed out on a Mk1 RS2000 replica last year that I still kick myself over, so I can see one arriving in the drive at some point.

Other attainables, perhaps a 6 series Beemer or an old M5. I'm quite partial to BM's.

5 or 6 years ago it was easy to find sporty exotica eg Ferrari Dinos , Urracos and the like but they seem to have been snapped up - blame the media pushing classic investing , and general internet savvy amongst those with discretionary cash ("effing baby boomers").

I seriously looked at Fiat Dinos and Alfa Montreals for a while, but then got hold of my emotions and commonsense prevailed.

Still...

Mk 2Jags are relative bargains ; the current owners are getting a bit old and the next gen isn't especially enamoured .

I guess you'll just have to get out and about (car shows) , sit in a few , drive a few and see what floats your boat.

6 series - I should like them but for some reason I don't.

they look mean in jobs look with big Simmons look rims.  Like the 928 lots of autos though.

8 series BMWs also a lot of car for the cash, but right at the bottom of the desirability cycle.  Just looks like a dated old coupe.

In my recent travel around the net I have seen a 35k ta22 celica and a 30k rx2 sedan.  Clearly not the only one with nostalgia it seems!

the E24 6 series are fantastic tourers and look great. the M30's do well with a little boost too..

re: 240z, i oscillate between wanting to set mine on fire or keeping it. christ it's slow as well.

Have always liked the earlier Z's. Love the sound of one with a decent exhaust.

Yeah, its getting ridiculous with prices of some cars

Always 'Rare car. Buy now whilst you can' blah blah

Saw a Toyota Crown for $17k recently. Nice n clean,  but 17k?

FDs have all been molested by the said stereotypes unfortunately. I'd love a clean 100% stock late model one though...they were ahead of their time styling wise and still relevant today!

Mercedes Benz R129 SL500 - Nice grunty GT with a removable hardtop and provide a completely different driving experience to a 911

Mazda MX5 NA - miles of smiles, low operating cost and easy to buy and sell without losing money

Honda s2000 - Lots of revs, Honda reliability and better residual than a Boxster, but only if stock

Alfa Brera

A few years ago I would have said a Honda NSX but they are going up in value and not sure if I would pay what they are asking for them and whether they will hold their value

Skyline R32 but only a good condition unmodified version

Holden Monaro but only if unmodified in yellow or red and without the 'nostrils'

RS2000 would be amazing but not sure I could bring myself to pay what they seem to cost now

A60 Toyota Supra

AW11 Toyota MR2

BMW Z3 M Coupe

Classic Mini Cooper

Having owned 2 FD Rx7's now I would not hesitate to get another if it was solely a fun car and not an everyday car. The fuel bill ruins the daily use for me. Series 8 ones are a must, and preferably converted to single turbo (heat is a issue with the twins)

Other on my want list include -

Lotus Exige

Nissan R34 GTR or a tidy R32 GTR

Honda NSX

Pics of my second FD, wish I had kept it...
