Gauge removal/installation 911 3.2

Hi all,

Bit of a weird one. I had my speedometer repaired and tried to reinstall recently. I really struggled getting it back in with the gasket. Had to put alot of pressure on the gauge and work it in. Even when I did get it in the rubber wasn't sitting right, so I had to take it out and reinstall it 10 15 times in attempt to get it to sit right. After a while of thinking it shouldn't be this hard, I hit the rubber gasket with some silicone spray and it slid right in, only problem I have now is I cannot for the life of me get every section around the gauge to sit flush. I've attached a photo, where you can see the gap.

Is it possible when taking it out and puting it with the force I used I potentially warped the gauge housing that's part of the dash? I attached some photos (didn't know it was actually part of the body). Not sure how thick the metal is, but it's the only thing I can think I've done.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

That looks pretty normal to me.  Suggest you just leave it for a few weeks and then give it a gentle massage to help it relax back to how it was.

I would be surprised if you have dented the dash panel.

I've got it into that position now using silicone spray, but no matter how I turn the gauge there's always that lowsecfion there, which has me thinking maybe I dented the dash panel when I was trying to put it in/take it out without silicone spray.

I know it's structural, but does look very flimsy from the photos I attached above.

You must be stronger than I imagine Ross!

Only way to check is to pull the gauge out again and use a straight edge across the dash face.  Are you sure you haven't just wrinkled the vinyl covering a little?

Haha. I just can't seem to figure out why it won't sit right. Spent a while staring at it trying to see why with no luck. Vinyl is OK, no wrinkles.

I don't think a straight edge will work? Dash seems to have a a curve in it from the photos above.

Maybe take the gasket of and reinsert, hold the black casing against it to see if there's a gap along the lines of 911's post. Even if there is, there's a bit of play in the gasket, I cant see why you couldn't work it to sit flush. When putting my clock in it took 3 or 4 goes to get it to sit right. With lub etc the clock would push past the gasket or one side was squashed and the other wasn't, I'd have to redo. Eventually got there.
