928 S4 Torque Tube

Hi all,

I don't know if this would be of use to anyone but I have the original torque tube from my 88 S4 which I've now sold to Spence.  Not having a 928 anymore, it's just taking up space in my carport and thought it could be of use to someone on the forum.

This was replaced as the bearing at the front (engine side) of the tube got a little noisy and scared the crap out of me thinking I had a TBF at the time.

I kept this tube thinking I'll put in some of the Black Sea 928 super bearings and make it a spare, but never really got around to it.  It has about 18,000 Japanese km on it plus 1,000 Aussie km.

I recommend this for WA people only, pick-up only.  It's bloody heavy and long (that'll kill any postage attempts), don't bring your 928 along thinking it will fit in the boot, it won't.  You'll need a trailer / decent ute tray to fit.

Out of interest , what sort of noise did it make? Rumbling or grinding , whirring or whining?

Whirring / hissing / whining combination from memory, but that is over 12 months ago now so my memory is a bit hazy.  I seem to remember it I initially thought it was static on the stereo until I turned it off.  Frequency and pitch changed with engine RPM in any gear.

Had my Pcar specialist stethoscope it and said it was the front bearing.  He didn't like having to warranty rebuilds and insisted that the whole tube be replaced with a new one, that was $4.5 k from Porsche...
