Speedo possessed by demons!!

Heres one for all the electrical gurus...the speedo needle bounces when the ignition is OFF! where do I start to look for the cause??

My electrical toolkit consists of a test light and a smoke detector, so keep any answers to a simpleton level please.

It seems to be the weekend for electrical gremlins, left the ignition on overnight after discovering the windscreen washer pump is kaput, and flattened the battery.-Doh!! Then I found windows won't go up (pwr window relay is kaput) drove from Geelong to Melbourne with the heater on full to compensate for the icy blast from 2 open windows before I realised I could just swap a relay to get the windows up- Doh!! At least my feet were warm. Then I noticed the bouncy needle this morning..what next? :(

Your speedo is held into the dash only by a rubber ring, so you should be able to just pull/prise it out gently enough to see the wires, looks like a short picking up current from an adjoining wire. Look for a frayed or bit of bare wire on a terminal. My speedo completely died and it was just a loose wire. If you can't see anything obvious, I'd not muck around as you don't want a dash fire, so get an auto sparky to look at it. A tip on the washer pump - my 1970 pump is on the washer bottle. When I got a new one from Pelican Parts, to fit it I had to mildly file and vaseline the knob it slides onto and to make the bottle rigid, fill it with water and freeze it, stops it collapsing in.Good Luck

Thanks Paul for the suggestion on the speedo. I'll have good look. The wiring under the dash is a bit of a rats nest thanks to the messy rewire when it was switched from LHD to RHD by the PO. Should be fun;)

I already ordered a new washer pump from PP. 1/3 the price of same part from P Melbourne. I got a few other things while in there to make the postage worth it.

Hi Harvs, if it's a rats nest, then this might be a good time to go to an auto electrician. Depending where you live in Melb.there are also specialists there who have complete wiring looms or can make you one, eg. Vintage Wiring Harness, in Ringwood North Ph.9870 0583 www.vinwire.com.au or in Kilsyth www.uniquewiringlooms.com.au ph.97284408
