996 Turbo MY01 Silver coupe, manual

The definitive PUG thread ..did they have Mi16s and Turbos in Aus then? Or is this after market… I also want to know where do you get  Golf GTI… why on earth those didnt hardly get down under I will never know. They were the death nail to the Escort :)

I think the answer on why no MK1 GTIs was mainly to do with the high value of the Duetschemark in the 80s and 90s, they would have been more expensive than a locally available V8 and the wisdom in the day was they wouldn't sell at that price. During that period VWs were actually sold via an agent/importer, as VW has exited the market

they brought the MK2 GTI in - they were a similar price to an SSv8 commodore at that time and only 250 were sold. I have one, totally unmollested, cool little car but rather gutless compared to the Mk1, the MK2 GTI 8v was heavy plus we got the de-tuned Japanese version of the engine, here is mine

Hi,

No, for the Pug 205s the Mi16 and Gti6 engines are all aftermarket and probably turbo unless it has been imported from Europe. The Pug was also very expensive due to the exchange rates (mine was $32K new in 1989) and it also was detuned com[pared to the UK versions I think due to emissions :(

My Golf Gti is not a Mk1, it is a Mk5 I bought new nearly 10 years ago but have added an APR ECU remap, full APR 3 inch exhaust, 18 inch BBS CHRs, carbonio cold air intake, EBC brake pads, etc and some cosmetic stuff. It is fun to drive. All Mk1s in Australia have been privately imported.

The Mk2 GTI looks in superb order. Don't see many of them.
