Stew F Posted 18February, 2017 Report Share Posted 18February, 2017 @JWM yes, the requirements for a 5 star rating are always evolving. That's why it's really hard to draw a comparison between a 2017 model and it's 5 year old equivalent. For example, the introduction of new driver aids and developments in collision impact protection over the last 10 or so years has gone a long way to reducing the likelihood of occupant injury. A 5 star car 6 years ago might be lucky to rate a 3 now, even if the chassis design hasn't changed. Having said that, a 30 year old well maintained merc or volvo still prvides better occupant safety than a 2016 car from some "new brands". My cousin is a researcher at the injury research centre here in Adelaide. Been there for 25+ years I reckon. She's often mentioned that there are numerous times when they've interrogate a vehicle after an accident resulting a fatality and find things like seat belt warnings, abs and airbags that have been deliberately bypassed. You can incorporate all the failsafes in the world, but you can't design to protect stupid people from themselves.
