Porsche 944 Rear Hatch Repair

Hi All,

First time posting - I've owned my Porsche 944 (1984) for about a year. Unfortunately, the rear hatch has started sliding away from the trim piece above. I understand this is not an uncommon problem due to the hatch/strut design + poor hatch closing etiquette.

The car is currently with the Porsche specialist here in Brisbane for a separate issue, but I am hoping to resolve this at the same time. I have discussed it with the mechanic and he has indicated that it is a somewhat fraught repair process. Has anyone had any experience with repairing this, or know of how to go about replacement?

I'm quite the novice in dealing with older/classic cars, unsure how to progress. Had been hoping my first post would be a 'here's my working car', but not to be i suppose!

Thank you

Have done this process in conjuntion with a friend who is an auto glass repairer. We seperated the frame from the glass with what looked like a piano wire slowly cutting through the old black adhesive. Cleaned and prepped all surfaces and then reapplied the frame to the glass using the black window adhesive. Used gaffer tape to hold tight and left it for 48 hours before installing as the struts can create movement.

@Rod C

Was there any mechanical fasteners in there that needed replacing? I’m thinking clips or screws?

How did the frame look after the repair?

From memory the only items ihad to replace were some of the small nut and bolts that secure the spoiler. Being in place for 35 years I had to sacrifice some to remove to three sections otherwise everything else was just cleaned up. Frame was fine and once in position the black adhesive cover all areas that were scraped clean and prepped. To remove nuts from spoiler I had to modify a flat screwdriver by removing a small portion in the middle. When you look at the nuts you will see what I mean. End of the screwdriver looked lioke a fork if that makes sense. You will need a fair amount of adhesive as you have to use it as a filler in some sections as did the factory. Could be wrong but it may have been eurothane that we used.

Thanks for your reply Rod. How long ago did you do the repair? I have been given the impression that perhaps refitting the glass may not be a long term solutions (will slide out again eventually). However, Finding and shipping another hatch also seems pretty tricky. Have you found any issues since repairing the glass?
