Coils or MAF? or both?

Hi all  Just wanted to see what the collective wisdom thinks this is likely to be.  Only started doing it this morning.  It shakes the whole car as it stumbles.  Started throwing codes, but I don't have a reader at the moment.

Thoughts?  My best guess is coils.  Please excuse the potato I have for a phone....

Coils test.

There is a simple test for the coils to see if they are good or not. All you need is an ohm meter:

Resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 15 at 20°C: 0.3 - 0.7 ohms. Anything outside of this range is suspect.

Likewise on the spark plug connectors: Resistance: approx. 2 k ohms

One potentially misleading issue with static resistance testing: Coils often test fine on the bench, but then break down electrically under hot load conditions. So if the unit is suspect, test it on the bench, but then swap it with a another coil pack from the engine that is working correctly and see if the misfire moves to that cylinder. If it does, the coil pack is toast.

How close is your independent Porsche specialist, they will only take a few minutes to diagnose with a reader. Also if in Vic, call Dave Brennan of 9XX Mechanical, formerly Nurburgring mechanical. He’s mobile and can diagnose as is a Porsche specialist.

Cheers tomo, Dave has been known to travel to country Vic and NSW. Would prob ask just to see.

Gnrnr, what i used to do in your situation was give the car an Italian tune up. Take it for a spirited drive and get up to redline.

Just make sure there is no knocking as in bearing slop before going, and check oil + coolant level.

Yeah oil and coolant is fine.  I am going to ring a local mechanic and just get the thing scanned.  Just haven't got around to making the call yet.

I know the MAF was pulled out and cleaned at the last service which under 500km driving before the problem appeared, so probably the MAF.  If the car sits idling for a bit it gets worse and doesn't clear with throttle.  Found that out last week after I fitted up the new coils (I'd been wanting to do those anyway so no biggie).

Good idea sjm but I think Gnrnr is up at Winton .
