withers Posted 29March, 2013 Report Share Posted 29March, 2013 I've got another Sporto question - rather than open a new thread, figured I'd shove it in this one Is the Sportomatic in the 74 - 76 the same as the one fitted to the SC? I'm basically asking if they drive the same or is there variants of say 3 vs 4 speed? I'm sure I read you can also add another gear to a Sporto? i was really smitten with the Sporto! tazzieman Posted 29March, 2013 Author Report Share Posted 29March, 2013 My bible states the sporto introduced in 1968 could be ordered in either 3 or 4 speed up until 1980. I guess lucky autobahn/strada users could use the extra gear!
f3nr15 Posted 29March, 2013 Report Share Posted 29March, 2013 The sportomatic was a four speed until the 1976 model year, when it changed to a 3 speed. The 3-speed has a different ring and pinion to the 4-speed, beefier than the 4-speed. The nice thing is that the extra first gear can be added to the 3-speed box, which was done to my car in the 1990s.
withers Posted 29March, 2013 Report Share Posted 29March, 2013 Thanks fellas maybe I'll buy a 2.7L Targa and do a manual for sporto swapout if I can't find the one I want!
